Not much louder, still: "I'm sorry."

That must be the woman whose lantern is drifting out to sea. And Gaeta could deftly rotate the topic back to John right there: tell me about her. share her memory to keep her alive. that's what we did with all of our loved ones.

But John's saying it all in service to a larger point about Mortanne, and what's waiting for them once the barrier comes down. Gaeta examines his cigarette; a breeze curls past and makes the tip flare orange.

"The thing is," he says abruptly, not looking away from his cigarette, "I was tied up at one end of a launch tube with a firing squad at the other end right before I died. I've had a theory for a while. Captain Dominguez was able to find a few bottles of ambrosia," he taps the bottle at his side, "even though the Colonies have been dead for years, so that means time is malleable, too, not just our deaths. That trip to see the Nyarlathotep cult confirmed it. So if Mortanne plans to save my life, she'll have to put me back at least twenty-four hours before I died. Preferably more. That may not be a particularly big string for her to pull, but..."

He shrugs.

"Still a string."
