Jean is sleeping like the dead; they have gotten used to having someone else with them, and the balm for their loneliness while Zelda and Pomni are at sea has them drooling on the pillow and, uncharacteristically, not waking up when Ryja leaves the bed, something their usual hypervigilance would have them doing.

The kitchen has coffee and, rather more importantly, a very nice coffee grinder. Jean and Zelda have a fuckin' coffee problem and they are not looking for solutions. The morning light through the windows also makes Jean's work nook rather more obvious - a writing desk off in a corner, with paper coating the walls. Each sheet is a drawing, with many subjects. People feature heavily - Zelda, Eddie, Pomni, Erik, Jon, Neil, and more, so many more, everyone Jean has ever met caught in candid moments of memory - but there are also diagrams of plants, landscapes, pictures of animals at moments of rest.

The window, though, has only one subject; it is papered over with drawings of a massacre on the festival green, with burning buildings in the background. Here and there the sketches are colored a rusty red, the only such drawings to be colored at all.
