An Unlikely Bargain
It has been a very strange day. Or… had it been a day? Perhaps longer? It’s difficult to wrap your head around exactly how much time has passed. What you do know is that a great deal has happened to you over a very short time and not all of it feels quite as real as it should. As you sit on a bench of old wooden board, salt assailing your eyes and nose, you distract yourself from the cold chill beginning to set in by letting your mind take you elsewhere. You retrace your steps, trying to make sense of it all.

You woke up on a well-loved and comfortable brown sofa in an unfamiliar room, beige walls and ugly, durable carpet. A heavy, woven blanket depicting a tapestry-like image of a horse and buggy covered most of your body. Across the room you see a desk of beautifully polished dark wood, covered in papers and knickknacks of all shapes and sizes. Your eyes lingered on them, taking in the sheer amount of them, and the fact that most of them had to do with horses for some reason. The cork bulletin board behind the desk was adorned with a calendar that was scribbled with handwritten notes, as well as papercraft snowflakes and a snowman that looked as though they’d been there much longer than a single winter.

Sitting up, the world swayed sickly as you tried to piece together what came before. The exact circumstances evaded you then, but the emotions persisted like waking from a terrible dream you can’t recall. Whatever it was, the dread that lingered in the back of your mind gave you the distinct impression that it had not been pretty.

Before you could attempt in earnest to reconstruct your memories, a door opened with a soft creak and brought with it the rich scent of chocolate. A woman entered, her long white hair tied back into a messy low bun, thick-knit black cardigan contrasting starkly against the pale strands. Her facial features made it difficult to discern her age, but she couldn’t be more than just a bit older than you. She pressed a warm mug into your hands, insisting you drink the hot cocoa within, and took a seat at the desk. Once you seemed a bit more settled in, she began to explain.

“You died,” she started, as casual as if she was telling you that you’d stubbed your toe or misplaced a pen. After a beat, she elaborated, “Or at least you may have. It’s not certain yet. You could very well pull through. That’s why I’m here--- to help you determine that.”

She went on to explain that you’d been in a near-death experience, one that was slowly starting to piece together in your memories. The chances of your survival were extremely poor but with a glimmer of hope --- a glimmer which she could offer you the chance to bring to light. The terms of this offer: you must take up a new life, in a far away land, find purpose there, and seek out the path to your own salvation. Do this and you will be returned to your old life, having survived your ordeal. Decline, and accept your fate with no other option but to move on to the afterlife.

You obviously had questions. Anyone would. But the woman refused to provide many of the answers you sought, not even her name, much less what role she has in all this or what your actual goal will be when you arrive. She claimed that she could not tell you because finding out for yourself would be part of the process and that everything would make sense in time.

It certainly hasn’t started to yet.

A Strange New World
Having accepted your fate, whether begrudgingly or with enthusiasm, you open your eyes once more to find yourself here, on the swaying, ramshackle ferry where you are now. The vessel carves its way through choppy black waves, like shards of broken obsidian, bearing you to an island on the horizon. Pockets of fog catch on the jagged gray cliffs and the small, stocky mountains. There is one low shore on the island and a hectic marina there that bustles with fishing boats conveying their cargo ashore.

The ferryman silently docks his vessel and gestures for you to pay your fare. You look down at yourself and realize that you have nothing from your previous life. You are dressed only in a simple linen shirt and trousers (possibly a coat as well, depending on the season). But in your pocket, you feel a weight. Two brass coins. The moment you drop them into the toll box, the ferryman moves to lower the ramp.

Marrow Isle greets you with a stiff ocean wind.

Stepping onto the pier, you are quickly and enthusiastically greeted by a short, chipper, loud-mouthed man who introduces himself as Yorick Aberdeen. According to him, he is the assistant of the Mayor as well as head of the Pumpkin Hollow Gazette. He gleefully walks you into the nearby town, marked by a swinging plank sign on a wrought iron lamp post with the words “Pumpkin Hollow” burned into the wood. “It’s good that you’re here,” he prattles. “We used to think it was impossible, you know. People getting through the barrier.” What's the barrier? He doesn't say. "But now every so often people arrive via the ferry, and it's been just splendid. Sure, the horrible curse that afflicts our island has gotten more aggressive since then, and there are more demons now. But the spike in the economy has been completely worth it. Oh, but do watch your step around manholes. There was an outbreak of Sewer Men last spring that we think has subsided but you can never be too careful."

As he explains the town’s plight with more and more glowing reviews of its recent events, he ushers you through the various shops and public service buildings of downtown until reaching Town Hall. He takes you directly to the office of the mayor of Pumpkin Hollow. The desk inside is fitted with a placard reading “Mayor Hellen Poe,” and is manned the most exhausted-looking woman you have ever seen. Dark circles hang beneath her stormy black eyes and strands of tightly curled brown hair have fallen loose from her haphazard attempt at a bun. Yorick is extremely pleased with himself as he proudly explains that “another one arrived from the ferry today,” and Mayor Poe’s face seems to show just the slightest sign of relief as she asks you to take a seat.

“Oh, good, another one,” she mutters, sounding relieved. “I don’t know how you or the others like you found this place, but thank the Mothers you did. I’m sure you have questions, so let me explain as best as I can.”

“Our town is dying, but also it cannot die. For decades now we have been plagued with supernatural activity, hauntings, mysterious disappearances, and all other manner of unexplainable things. It started small but has since escalated to a breaking point. The few of us that remain are trapped by an invisible barrier. We cannot leave, as the only vessel that can sail more than a few miles out is that accursed ferry, which seems to be just as much a part of all this paranormal madness as the rest of it. Anyone who has tried to sail past the ring of darker waters around our island has their vessel destroyed. And yet somehow, the usual trappings of what death entails elude us.. Anyone who dies is shortly restored to life in an albeit disheveled state somewhere on the island. Poor Yorick has probably died at least a dozen times now.”

“Because of all the deaths we had prior to losing our ability to properly die and the droves of residents that left the isle when things grew too intense, the remaining population is both unable to perish and unable to escape. It’s unsustainable, and yet we have no choice. We need farmers, fishmongers, blacksmiths, doctors, anything. But now the ferry is bringing people here. People who need a place to go, and I believe we can help each other.”

“There is a tavern up the way. The Oak & Iron. Old and spacious. You are welcome to stay there on the town’s dime while you get settled. However, if you choose to take up work of any kind, we will also assist you with basics. Tools, housing, transport, land if necessary. And of course we’ll pay you.” At this point, she catches herself, not wanting to ramble and certainly not wanting to beg. The situation is obviously quite desperate.

“Things to think about,” the mayor concludes, handing you a map and a Sending Stone. “Take these, and ask Yorick if you need directions. The tavern is on the corner of Mill Street. They know the drill. And please do let me know if you’re interested in work.”

From there, you are left to your own devices and return to the sleepy cobblestone streets of Pumpkin Hollow. Welcome to your new life. How will you begin?

Care to Stay for a Spell?
Pumpkin Hollow is a horror-comedy game with an underlying mystery for players to collaboratively solve. Inspired by tongue-in-cheek horror like Welcome to Nightvale and Fallen London, Pumpkin Hollow aims to combine blithe humor with creeping dread in a way that allows players to get the best of both worlds. Opportunities for sleuthing, slice of life, adventure, and action are woven into the fabric of this lore-rich horror game so that you can pick your poison, combined with branching paths to create an array of options for how you play the game.

In addition to monthly game-wide events, Pumpkin Hollow also features random events for individuals or small groups that may be influenced by your job, location, or alliances. We also have several fully interactable plot characters amid our colorful cast of NPCs. Interview them and swap clues with your neighbors to uncover the dark secrets of Marrow Isle and find your way home!

To get started, the main things you'll want to read over are the Rules, Applications, Taken Page, Economy, Locations, and Death. Don't feel obligated to read all of the subsections under Economy-- you can take your time with that as long as you get the gist. We are also getting deeper into the plot, so don't feel bad if it takes you a while to get up to speed on recent events. And don't worry, you're not too late just because you missed the beginning! If you have any questions, your friendly mod trio is here to help! Hit up our FAQ or chat with us directly on Discord and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Keep your lantern lit, and good luck!
Rules
Community Standards || Here at Pumpkin Hollow, we have a handful of common sense rules that we require players to adhere to. They are as follows:

- The Usual. Don't god-mod, info-mod, powergame, ect. Don't try to force or coerce other players into situations that make them uncomfortable. Harassment and bigotry are strictly prohibited.

- Stay Informed. It is the responsibility of all players to make themselves aware of all rules and expectations, and maintain game duties. We will do our due diligence by making sure all the information you need is available to you, please do yours by using it!

- This Tall to Ride. Players must be over the age of 18 to play. Pumpkin Hollow will feature a variety of horror content and is NSFW-friendly, and we don't feel comfortable being responsible for curating an age-appropriate experience for minors.

- Strike System & Bans. We operate on a standard three-strike system for failure to adhere to the rules. Mods reserve the right to issue multiple strikes or an automatic ban for behavior deemed especially severe. We will always do our best to discuss issues with players in an informal capacity before taking disciplinary action, if we're able and it's appropriate to the situation.

- Reader Safety. Because Pumpkin Hollow is a horror game, it's important that as a courtesy to other players, tags containing sensitive content be labeled prominently with a content warning. We have a list below of what we consider "sensitive content", and players can request things be added to the list if needed. Everyone has the right to make informed decisions about what they read and when!

- Communication is Imperative. Roleplay is an inherently collaborative hobby. As such, we expect straightforward, good-faith communication from players. If you run into an issue with another player, please do your best to resolve it with maturity and compassion. And don't be afraid to reach out to your mod team! We can't keep an eye on everything, and your communication is valuable!

- Be Good to Each Other. At the end of the day, respect is the most important aspect of any community-driven space. Be respectful to one another, always act in good faith, and have fun!

-We're All In This Together. Finally, the most important part of all this is that we hope you all want to help us build a safe and happy RP community. By agreeing to our community standards when you app in, you agree that the well-being of your fellow players, good faith action, transparency, and mutual respect are important to you. Let's create an awesome space together!

Banned Activities

In addition to sensitive content, we have a short list of IC behaviors that we do not allow to appear in threads. No judgement to those who enjoy RP with these topics, we just don't feel comfortable hosting them in Pumpkin Hollow. PLEASE NOTE: this does not mean that these subjects cannot be discussed ICly or be a part of your character's backstory, we just ask that your characters do not participate in these activities during your stay Pumpkin Hollow. Setting
Detailed Information
NPCS LOCATIONS BESTIARY RELIGION ASTROLOGY DEATH WORLD

Basics

Pumpkin Hollow is set in a fictional world similar to Middle Earth or Faerûn, but further along in time. The setting's time period is reminiscent of early-Industrial Revolution Europe, best described as Victorian Gothic with a very slight steampunk edge. No real-world locations or fictional locations from existing IPs exist within the world of Pumpkin Hollow.

Technological developments would be comparable Studio Ghibli's "Castle in the Sky" or Fable 3. Common technology includes rudimentary electricity, oil lamps, dated indoor plumbing, telegrams, and the occasional rotary phone. The town also has a short trolley route and a small railroad loop. Airships exist, but cannot be found on Marrow Isle, and early forms of cars exist but are seldom seen on Marrow Isle due to the size and isolation of the island.

Denizens of Pumpkin Hollow are somewhat accustomed to paranormal activity. In this world, proper magic is not unheard of (though somewhat rare). Non-humans are also reasonably common. Pumpkin Hollow's population consists predominantly of humans, but the world beyond Marrow Isle consists of numerous fantasy species such as dwarves, elves, orcs, and more. As such, fantastical creatures will not really be given a second glance in this setting. (Additional information on the extended worldbuilding surrounding Pumpkin Hollow can be found in the "World" page, linked above, as it is part of a greater extended world. However, most of this information is irrelevant to this game and is only for flavor and/or context.)

Marrow Isle is part of an archipelago nation called the Emerald Isles. The language spoken here is Emeran, which is functionally English. Your character's native tongue or primary language will automatically be translated, but secondary languages may not be.

The primary religion on Pumpkin Hollow does not have a proper name for itself, but is so widespread in the world that it hardly seems necessary to bother. Its followers are sometimes referred to as Children of the Earth. It has its roots in the calendar and wheel of the year, venerating the seasons and the natural world. It worships four goddesses who each represent a season and a realm of the natural world. More on this can be learned through the Sacred Roots Temple of Our Four Earthly Mothers, sometimes called the Temple of Seasons, which is the lone church on Marrow Isle.

For additional information on the island, its inhabitants, and its quirks, the links above will prove useful as you learn more about your new surroundings. May your lantern always be lit!

Organizations

Within Pumpkin Hollow there are a number of organized groups run by well-known locals. These noteworthy denizens of Pumpkin Hollow society will appear in TDMs and events and are fully interactable, or you can go to them directly where their organizations meet. Explore the links below at your leisure to learn more about these groups, reach out to their leaders, or chat with other members. You may even find yourself interested in joining one! Joining organizations is not a necessity, but it can unlock unique information, perks, and CR opportunities.

ACTIVITY CHECK BANK SHOPS

Overview
Pumpkin Hollow runs on a currency called Brass, so named for the brass coins imprinted with images of the Four Goddesses. You will have to pay for everything you want or need here--- food, clothing, upgrades to your tools, various weapons, transportation, special items, and more.

Universal basic income is guaranteed. We’re cursed, not capitalists! Everyone receives a stipend each month of 100 Brass. The first is given when you arrive, and each one after is distributed when you turn in your Community Engagement Survey (otherwise known as “Activity Check”) to Town Hall.

Want to make more money than the monthly stipend? The best way to do that is by getting a job. Pumpkin Hollow is looking for economic growth, so Town Hall is giving away starter packages and incentives to get people started if they want to work, filling important roles in the town. Anyone with one of these jobs can start earning bonuses to their monthly stipend. Your profits will increase based on your engagement in the community--- the more time you spend interacting with others, the better your reputation among the townspeople, and the more business you receive.

As such, when you turn in your Activity Check each month, you will have an opportunity to turn in links to up to ten RP threads. Submitted threads must have at least 10 replies dated within that month, but for each thread submitted, you will earn an extra 50 Brass, meaning you can earn up to an extra 500B a month, just by spending time with your fellow residents. Make upgrades to your business via the shops for even higher bonuses!

Of course, some people may not want to work. Perhaps working just isn’t your style, you haven’t decided what would be a good fit for you as a job, or you just can’t be bothered to deal with accounting. Should you choose to remain unemployed there will always be space for you at the Oak and Iron, Pumpkin Hollow’s most established inn, and you will still receive your 100B stipend at each Activity Check.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that your monthly Activity Check is a REQUIREMENT for membership to Pumpkin Hollow, and players who do not turn in their Activity Check by the deadline will not receive stipends for their characters that month, creating IC problems for your character as well as OOCly putting you on activity probation (meaning that if you miss the next check, you will be swept).

We know that money management in Pumpkin Hollow can be tricky at first or a lot to keep track of, which is why our Bank page has a ledger via Google Sheets to allow players and mods to work together to keep tabs on finances. If you have any questions, we are more than happy to answer, so please don’t hesitate to ask!
- Available Jobs -
Farmer
Plant a seed, start a legacy. Farming is a time-honored tradition since nearly the beginning of time, and the backbone of civilization. Food shortages are historically one of Pumpkin Hollow’s biggest struggles, but there’s plenty of fertile farming land to be found--- all that’s needed is someone to farm it! Those who choose to take up this mantle are awarded a small farmhouse, some basic tools, a plot of land, a chicken coop, and a horse and simple carriage. You also are guaranteed basic food at no cost by the nature of your work. However, you are fairly isolated from town and your livelihood is susceptible to the island's unpredictable weather. Your old tools may break or leave you sore and fatigued, so consider investing in tool upgrades when you're able.

Artisan
The makers of things that make life easier and more beautiful, artisans are valued members of society. Make a living from a craft you already know or hone a new one as a tailor, potter, weaver, blacksmith, carpenter, or any other manner of craftsperson, to help fill the town with useful tools, beautiful garments, sturdy furnishings and more! Artisans are given homes close to the heart of town with a built in workshop, and a discount on other handmade goods due to their affiliation with the Artisan's Guild. It can be hard to get away from their work, though, and may find their free time limited to riskier outings after dark.

Laborer
Behind every great society is a bunch of underappreciated, hard working people doing thankless jobs to keep that society turning. Your work as a laborer may be behind the scenes, but never doubt its importance! Take on a role as a miner, railroad worker, construction worker, engineer, or factory employee to become a productive member of the community in its most literal sense. You are repaid for performing necessary evils with a lovely townhouse close to one of the town's many trolley stops, making it extremely easy to commute and otherwise move about town. Additionally, hardworking laborers can be eligible for bonuses at their boss's discretion. The tradeoff is that your schedule is very strict and getting a day off can be a challenge. You may also find yourself in danger more often depending on the nature of your work.

Entertainer
What is society without art to make it beautiful? To keep morale high, Town Hall is awarding charming apartments and a place in the limelight to talented individuals who can keep the town smiling. Positions as a fine artist, musician, or any manner of stage performer are open! This role also applies to individuals who provide entertainment of the “adult” variety. Such work is legal to practice in Pumpkin Hollow as long as you have a license from Town Hall and are over the age of 20! The entertainer role is primarily reserved for those with preexisting (i.e. canon) skill in their desired field, but those who can demonstrate their mettle are rewarded with a charming apartment downtown that does not require any upgrading to be comfortable. Be aware, however, that show business is harsh and gigs are not guaranteed. You may sometimes find your finances much more in flux than other jobs.

Enforcer
A most beloved line of work for anyone who loves protecting the weak and/or government sanctioned acts of violence, enforcers are the defenders of the law and the vanquishers of criminals. Take up work as a constable, mercenary, or guard to help keep Pumpkin Hollow safe and orderly. Those who take up this line of work are generously (and ironically) given a home in the safest part of scenic Northwest Hollow. They will also have access to many important records in the town's archives, have an easier time convincing locals to give them information, and may find that the law is willing to bend for them on occasion. Workplace supervision is also comically lax. But bear in mind that this work is not for the faint of heart. Occupational hazards are plentiful, and enforcers may be asked to make tough moral decisions that will put their ethics against their desire to keep their job.

Physician
It is debatable which role is the most valuable in Pumpkin Hollow, but no one will contest that physicians are high up on the list. While death is impermanent here, it isn’t desirable, and with injuries and illness cropping up all the time in a cursed town there is no question that physicians are a necessity to keeping the townsfolk alive and well. Those who accept this duty will find themselves at the mercy of a hectic schedule and unexpected call-ins. Additionally, it is entirely possible to accidentally kill a patient, which will not make you very popular when they resurrect the following day. But on the bright side, physicians have the option of either a home in town with a built-in clinic or a lovely cottage in Northwest Hollow with a clinic elsewhere. There is also no one the locals tend to trust more than their doctor.

Fisherman
Set sail upon the crisp, dark sea surrounding Marrow Isle and cast nets and lines and crab pots to bring in a vital source of food for the town. Fishermen (who do not have to be men) must spend a great deal of time on the water and are required to sail either with a crew or in pairs. Occupational hazards are commonplace, as fishing boats are susceptible to both supernatural and weather events and are extremely isolated when at sea. However, such high risks are not without comparable reward. Fishing boats are equipped with dredging equipment that may help them find all manner of treasure or mysterious artifacts. Additionally, fishermen are gifted a lovely seaside cottage as part of their startup package and ample shore leave between fishing trips, as well as guaranteed basic food at no cost.

Laggard
No one said you had to work. When you arrive, you are given a place at the Oak & Iron where your room and meals are comped by Town Hall, and there is no deadline to how long you can stay there as long as you are engaged with the community. Maybe you’re saving up for something special, haven’t decided what to do yet, or just want to avoid having to budget, but continuing to hog a room at the inn is always an option albeit not a terribly ambitious one. Food and lodging are guaranteed with monthly vouchers alongside your flat 100B stipend and are beholden to no particular schedule, giving you a lot of freedom. However, you sacrifice your eligibility for monthly activity bonuses and your room at the inn has extremely limited options for personalization.

Entrepreneur
Start your own business! Own a shop, a bar, a restaurant, or any other business in town that is completely of your own design, and live anywhere in Pumpkin Hollow you like. An ambitious undertaking that doesn’t come with any handouts from Town Hall, you must pay for your new business out of pocket at the bank. Prices will vary depending on what you'd like to build but none will come cheap. However, you will earn the respect of the townspeople for bringing a new business to Pumpkin Hollow and be automatically upgraded to the highest level of Brass bonuses for activity. Bravo, you! To get started, go to the bank tab and put in a request for an estimate so you can see your target, and get saving. Savvy savers with high activity should be able to put together the money in a few months.

Unique
Special jobs received through narrative circumstances are still eligible for stipend bonuses! Maybe you were offered a spot on the newspaper, a job at a public office, or a role on the staff of Leeds Manor. Perhaps a player character offered you work at the business they opened! You can absolutely accept these jobs and have them function in the same way as other jobs, though business upgrades may require more specific narrative situations instead of a flat fee. Reach out to the mods to discuss semantics if interested!

Youth / Apprentice
A housing and income category intended for characters under the age of 18. Instead of the Oak & Iron, younger newcomers may be put up in a dormitory house originally intended for Pumpkin Hollow's population of young orphans (which dwindles every year due to parents no longer staying dead, yay!) This location is called the Robin's Nest Dormitory Home. They still will be provided food, and can choose to contribute to grocery money and help housekeeping work around the dorm house or community service in town in lieu of a job in order to earn AC bonuses regularly. Those taking this route would mark their job as "Youth" on AC. Older teenagers may choose to take on apprenticeships with adult characters (PC or NPC) to prepare for a proper career, and Apprentices have the option to move into independent housing comparable to that of their mentors. Additionally, education is available and encouraged at the Pumpkin Hollow Schoolhouse, but not required.

Your eyes linger on them, taking in the sheer amount of them, and the fact that most of them had to do with horses for some reason.

You are dressed only in a simple linen shirt and trousers, but in your pocket, you feel a weight. Two brass coins. The moment you drop them into the toll box, the ferryman moves to lower the ramp.

Marrow Isle greets you with a stiff ocean wind.

Stepping onto the pier, you are quickly and enthusiastically greeted by a short, chipper, loud-mouthed man who calls himself Yorick. He gleefully walks you into the nearby town, marked by a swinging plank sign on a wrought iron lamp post with the words “Pumpkin Hollow” burned into the wood. “It’s good that you’re here,” he prattles. “Not many people come to the island anymore, you know. I think word of the vampire outbreak from a few years ago reached the mainland, and a lot of people left after that incident with the sewer men. By the way, I wouldn’t stand too close to any open manholes downtown. They’re probably gone now, but you can’t be too careful!”

Dark circles hang beneath her stormy eyes and strands of curly brown hair have fallen loose from her haphazard attempt at a braided bun. Yorick is extremely pleased with himself as he proudly explains that “another one arrived from the ferry today,” and Mayor Poe’s face seems to show just the slightest sign of relief as she asks you to take a seat.

“Thank the gods,” she muttered. “I don’t know how you or the others like you found this place, but thank the gods you did.

The few of us that remain are trapped. We cannot leave, as the only vessel that can sail more than a mile out is that accursed ferry, which seems to be just as much a part of all this paranormal madness as the rest of it.

“Things to think about,” the mayor concludes, handing you a map. “Take this, and ask Yorick if you need directions. The tavern is on the corner of Mill Street. They know the drill. And please do let me know if you’re interested in work.”

From there, you are left to your own devices and return to the sleepy cobblestone streets of Pumpkin Hollow. Welcome to your new life. How will you begin?

General Game Rules
Here at Pumpkin Hollow, we have a handful of common sense rules that we require players to adhere to. They are as follows:

CAST LOCATIONS ORGANIZATIONS ZODIAC DEATH

Overview
Pumpkin Hollow is set in a fictional world similar to Earth. The setting is reminiscent of early-Industrial Revolution Europe, with a very slight steampunk edge. A good example would be Studio Ghibli's "Castle in the Sky". No real-world locations or existing fictional locations exist within the world of Pumpkin Hollow.

Encountering non-humans is an infrequent but not terribly remarkable occurrence. At worst, those who are non-human or have some kind of power might be treated with wariness.

It worships four goddesses who each represent a season, an element, and a realm of the natural world. More on this can be learned through the Sacred Roots Temple of Our Four Earthly Mothers, sometimes called the Temple of Seasons, which is the lone church on Marrow Isle.

Pumpkin Hollow has only been established on Marrow Isle for approximately 50 years. Due to its propensity for paranormal activity, life here has always been a bit of a struggle, though its troubles have intensified significantly over the past few decades. While mostly safe during the day, the setting of the sun marks the height of the danger. Many places on the island observe the suggested curfew very strictly. It is particularly dangerous to be caught in complete darkness, giving rise to a unique Pumpkin Hollow send-off. The phrase "keep your lantern lit" is obviously quite literal, but also is a more general warning to be cautious, and the phrase "may your lantern always be lit" is local slang wishing someone safety.

For additional information on the island, its inhabitants, and its quirks, the links above will prove useful as you learn more about your new surroundings. May your lantern always be lit!

ACTIVITY CHECK BANK JOBS SHOPS

Economy Overview

Make upgrades to your business for even higher bonuses!

Small Delay on May Event

Hey all!

As some of you may know from the server, Meghan, Elsie's player and the guest writer for the May event, has been dealing with some pretty severe life stuff over the past little while. After some discussion, Meghan does need a little bit more time to finish getting her feet back under her, but we were able to come up with a strategy to do that while not derailing the event timeline too drastically. I'll be providing some writing support to take some of the workload, and the event will be launching with a slight delay--- likely Wednesday or Thursday of next week as opposed to Sunday.

Thanks so much for everyone's patience! Team Pumpkin is super duper grateful for all of the time and effort and love Meghan puts into playing Elsie as well as her PCs, as well as her flexibility and consideration of everyone's time even while life is being particularly terrible. Please send Meghan your love, and keep the hype train going for this month's event! It's gonna be AWESOME!

Monthly Plotting Post | March

Monthly Plotting Post | March
Happy Spring, gang! February was a tough month for a lot of folks in the game, but with warm weather and more sunshine on the horizon, I am so excited for what’s to come! I’m also SO PLEASED to be celebrating the anniversary of our game’s biggest boost in size to date! Even if the circumstances surrounding the Sail Migration weren’t the best, and we had a lot of growing pains in the aftermath of such a large change, we also gained a lot of beloved and engaged community members and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m so glad you guys are here and I’m so excited to celebrate the anniversary of our time as a community.

In more game-related news: I don’t know about you guys, but with a major plot event on the way (i.e. Efrain’s downfall in the March event), I could use a little extra time to wrap up my current threads and gear up for the big moment. Merrymeet is one of my favorite recurring events, and I’m excited to give it the time it deserves before a major plot development. Plus we’ve got a new TDM going up toward the beginning of March and a small mingle! As such, I’m going to have the March event be a little bit on the late side this month. I’m thinking either the 23rd or the 28th. Thoughts one way or the other? Drop a comment on the mod toplevel or let us know on Discord!

I also want to use this month’s metaplot section to talk about the game’s future--- the roadmap for the rest of the game, and what the sequel game will look like! It’s still a good ways off (like probably 8-12 months if we’re really efficient), but I want to give folks plenty of time to think about their post-game plans! Plus I’ve had it on the brain.

SPRING TDM
March through May
Originally, we had Pokemon acquisition sequestered to specific periods of time and only specific types, and the reason for this is because we didn’t want them to overwhelm the game. However, over the past year and a half, the concerns we had about Pumpkin Hollow developing a heavy culture around Pokemon that overtook the game never really came to pass--- people generally don’t even fill all their slots, and they are used more as a fun accent rather than a main feature! When last we discussed the Pokemon situation in the server, we had people express that they might like to check out some other types and we’d planned to have them available for Summer and Winter this year, but with the understanding that the way Pokemon are treated by the player base will most likely continue, we’d like to go ahead and offer them year-round with types determined by season, and have divided up all the types into a thematically appropriate season!

For springtime, you’ll be able to find Grass, Fairy, Ground, Bug, and Normal! (Yep, that’s right--- by popular demand, Eevee will be available with this change!) Rather than a special article, available types will now be listed at the top of the Gazette, and the intro article will make a brief note. We are prepared to roll back this change if it doesn’t work out or if it’s undesirable, but the intention is to make it so that everyone will have a chance to get their faves. Catch responsibly! Each character is still limited to 6 Pokemon pals, as we don’t have a PC for you to send them to!

Also on the agenda for spring right now are the player-requested community laundry days, a potluck as an homage to last year’s, as well as the ever-popular speed-dating from last year. (Although this year it’ll be called “Swift Social” to be inclusive of those looking for platonic CR, though it’ll still have opportunities to indicate you’re looking for love.) I’ve also got some plant-themed and fae-themed spookies on the docket for spring that are still in the works, so stay tuned! As always, I’m also open to suggestions!

HARBOR DAY MINGLE
March 5th
To celebrate the anniversary of the Great Sail Migration, we’ll be doing a simple mingle event called Then and Now--- post a toplevel to invite other characters to comment leaving their first impressions of yours and how they compare to their current feelings. How have things changed since your character arrived? Whether you’ve been here for a year, the whole game, or just a week or two, enjoy reminiscing with your Pumpkin Hollow pals!
MARCH SADNESS
Late March
It’s finally time to take down another Demon Prince! Efrain, the Prince of Sorrow’s Song, is the last thing standing between Prince Aster and becoming heir apparent--- leaving only King Eligos himself as Aster’s final obstacle.

A while ago, Nimbus had mentioned offhandedly the idea of a “day at the opera” event which has lived in my head rent-free ever since, and so it’s off to the opera we go. In Efrain’s attempt at a grand demonstration of his power, he will be transporting the islanders to a grand amphitheater, where his demonic orchestra will perform musical interpretations of each islander’s deepest source of pain, regret, and sorrow--- with the subject themself and their loved ones compelled to play the roles on stage while everyone else is a captive audience. Play out musical renditions of scenes from your past with your CR cast as your loved ones or enemies, catch a moment to chat in the Green Room before or after your performance, or find moments of solidarity from the auditorium seats between songs.

Not feeling the limelight? Take on a role as a member of the stage crew for the show and succumb instead to the despair of endless toil for the cruel and merciless stage manager! Take a seat in the pit and play with the orchestra, feeling every moment of others’ pain by proxy from the music your hands are forced to create. Or get saddled with a job in the concession stand for a different flavor of suffering--- mindless drudgery for an uncaring public. The choice is yours! But get too feisty and face the wrath of the security guards: a shade of one of your own loved ones like the false Ballister that had been created for Nimona.

However, Aster will be taking the beginning of March to prepare his assassins. Have a bone to pick with Efrain? Let me know and the demon-killing effort might recruit you! But anyone looking to get too close to Efrain will have to fight their way through his strange bodyguards, creatures of living glass whose creation Pyotr Stamatin may have to answer for later.

Due to the narrative function of the event, I am unfortunately unable to offer a full opt-out aside from a handwave for this event. But hopefully I’ve created enough alternative ways to enjoy this pity party that you’ll be able to find one that suits you! If not, let me know!
CURRENT METAPLOT
A lot has been going on recently in plot town! Primarily, the discovery that Dr. Elias Coldwood, lighthouse keeper and biologist, has a nascent Eldritch godling in his basement! There are two separate threads about this ongoing, one between Shen Qingqiu, Valdis, and Elias himself and the other between Gerry, Arthur, and John Doe. What is this creature that Elias has created? What are its ties--- and his--- to Nyarlathotep? And who was it that posted Elias’ anonymous bail just in time for him to attend Merrymeet? More details to come!

With all that’s going on in the game’s present day, I wanted to talk briefly about the trajectory for the game’s future as well! Here’s a basic outline of the major plot beats I’m planning to hit, unless something drastic changes:
➼ At the end of March, individuals chosen by Aster will be given the opportunity to kill Efrain. With Mendel dead, Aster will be the last remaining Prince left to succeed Eligos for the Infernal Throne.
➼ Throughout the Spring, fae involvement will become more prevalent. I’m still working out the exact details, but there are plans for Elsie and Olwylder to become more deeply involved in the plot, including a surprise I’m planning with Meghan!
➼ Also during this time, Eligos will be doing more to work on his contingency plan for dealing with Aster, which will involve turning Aster’s Court and Infernal Servants against him, and powering up his own favored and those of his other two sons.
➼ In the late summer, Eligos will make his own last stand, and he will die--- but not without setting things up for Aster’s eventual downfall in the process.
Aster will ascend the Infernal Throne.
➼ Dahlia will officially become a Prince--- and next in line for succession, as Aster has no other children. The Pine Devil’s curse of consumption will cease to be.
➼ With assistance from those that Eligos granted power to, those given boons by goddesses, and her own newly founded Court of Woman Scorned, Dahlia will strike back at Aster and become the new King of Hell.
As the only one left to maintain the contract with Nyarlathotep, Dahlia will break the truce, lowering the barrier!
➼ However, Nyarlathotep will not take kindly to this--- his reaction will remain a surprise for now, but this will launch us into a pre-endgame state where certain tasks must be accomplished to initiate endgame proper. We’re anticipating this taking several months at least.
➼ Once all tasks are accomplished, the final face-off with Nyarlathotep will occur, and the game will end with it finally being possible and safe to leave Marrow Isle. This will initiate our exploration-based sequel game, Emerald Crown! Pumpkin Hollowites will be given the means to leave this world and come back at will.
As we’re building up to the trials that characters will face during these major plot beats, we’re going to be looking at ways to make characters more formidable through items, skills, transformations, canon updates, and more! We’d like to get as many folks in on it as we can and plan as far in advance as possible. We look forward to seeing what cool ideas we can work out with all of you!

We’re also anticipating all of this taking quite some time, so there’s no rush to make major plans right this minute. Additionally, we’re planning to have Emerald Crown be more self-guided in an effort to give ourselves a break from heavy plot. We have more plot-heavy projects to share with you all in the future, and we could use some time to kick back and just play it by ear while we plan ahead! It’s also my plan to run a short-term game alongside Emerald Crown. Harvey, Drake, and I, operating under the name “Team Pumpkin,” have plans to bring you all tons of RP fun for years to come!

PHEW that was a long plotting post--- sorry it’s dropping so late at night for most of you! But we hope you’re as excited as we are to keep going on this adventure together!

Case Files

A handful of case files that are of interest turn up during Cerrit and Leon's organization efforts, tucked into the back of some sad, abandoned filing cabinet.

The first appears to be the details surrounding a missing person case.

CASE FILE MP-020846-CD
Type: Missing Person
Date Opened: Feb. 8, 16:46
Receiving Officer: Detective Antony Belmont
Victim: Linette Brenning
Suspects:
Witnesses:
Initiator: Harriet Leeds-Brenning
Relationship: Victim's wife
Date Closed:
Case Status: Cold

Initial report given by Initiator on the date of opening after Victim had been missing in excess of 48 hours. Victim last seen at her apothecary shop on Hemlock Street in Downtown Hollow on the afternoon of Feb. 5, 46. Shop was found closed properly by Initiator and investigators. No witnesses report having seen any sign of Victim after her last sighting. No one witnessed the shop being locked up or Victim exiting the building from either the front or back door.

No sign of a struggle was seen in or around the apothecary. Victim's home shows no signs of struggle, robbery, evacuation, or being tossed. No suicide or runaway note. Items appear to be left as they had when she left. Only items missing were those that she took to work: a white dress, her everyday shoes, her wedding ring, and her locket. Initiator reported no unusual behavior at Victim's time of leaving. No catastrophizing or talk of self-harm. All conversations appeared normal.

A list of various investigation locations and interview details follow. None appear relevant. The list of supporting officers includes Janine Kilbride. The case was unresolved and moved to cold status one year after it was opened. Harriet Leeds-Brenning died a few months after.

The next file that appears relevant is a harassment case.

CASE FILE HM-102245-DM
Type: Harassment
Date Opened: Oct 22 16:45
Receiving Officer: Constable Bethany Meeks
Victim: Neil West
Suspects: Japhet Leeds
Witnesses: Elias Coldwood-West
Initiator: Neil West
Relationship: Self
Date Closed: Nov 6, 16:45
Case Status: Dismissed

Victim believes he is being stalked by Suspect. Claims to have sensitive information about Suspect which has caused Suspect to run a hidden smear campaign against Victim. Claims that slander, libel, and other forms of defamation have been taking place in secret to drive away his business and silence him, despite the fact that he alleges he has not shared this information. Vehemently denies any attempts at vigilante justice investigations to confirm the information he acquired. Suspect claims this is not the case, denies allegations.

Victim cannot identify any witnesses as he does not know who was told what. Only identifiable witness is his spouse, Dr. Coldwood-West. Witness provided minimal information, claiming that business has dropped off significantly and strange people have been spotted outside West Dream Analytics, but can only speculate as to the reasons. His speculations mirror that of the Victim, but less confidently. He apparently cannot verify the alleged sensitive information--- neither its details nor its truth. Witness also mentioned that Victim "seems paranoid."

Without firm details, case must be closed. Accused does not intend to press counter-charges. Case is available for reopen if Dr. West can provide hard evidence of harassment as it is defined by city bylaws.

CROSS REFERENCE: Case DHR - 111545 - RS

The recommended cross reference material is also found right behind this file.

CASE DHR - 111545 - RC
Type: Desecration of Human Remains
Date Opened: Nov 11 16:45
Receiving Officer: Chief Constable Janine Kilbride
Victim: Jasper Leeds
Suspects: Elias Coldwood-West
Witnesses: Linette Brenning, Harriet Leeds-Brenning
Initiator: Japhet Leeds
Relationship: Victim's Father
Date Closed: Dec 2, 16:45
Case Status: Resolved, Conviction

Suspect was spotted by Witnesses (who were together) in Fall's Promise Cemetery after dark on the night of Nov. 11, 45, attempting to remove the remains of the late Jasper Leeds from their entombment. Witnesses informed Initiator who then contacted the authorities. Constables arrived at the scene to find Suspect still at the scene, attempting to use Eldritch magic for necromancy. Suspect did not resist arrest.

Suspect explains his intention was to summon Victim to request information with regard to CASE FILE HM-102245-DM in an attempt to reopen or resolve the claims made by his spouse regarding Initiator. He was not able to successfully perform the ritual before authorities arrived. Suspect was surprisingly candid about the incident, willfully admitting that he did not make any attempt to acquire permission from the surviving family of Victim or petition law enforcement for a Warrant to Summon.

Suspect pled guilty to all charges on Dec 2, 45 and was convicted to 1 year in prison for Desecration of Human Remains. Was given parole after 6 months for good behavior and was released July 5, 46.

Sending Stones

As of 2-12-2024, an unknown boon was issued to Cerrit Agrupnin for an item from his canon (Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, a Critical Role spinoff) to be distributed to all individuals in Pumpkin Hollow. Sending Stones are an arcane item that allows to people to magically connect and communicate by voice, similar to a cell phone.

According to the rules of 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, Sending Stones only function in matched pairs. However, the stones we will be using in Pumpkin Hollow will have no such requirement. All you will need to do is hold the stone and think of the person you want to contact.

The stone is a little bit bigger than palm-sized and pings quietly and pulses with light when someone is trying to reach you. Both stones will be lit with magical light when a call is active. Unfortunately they are not capable of text or video. Certain elements of the stone, like its carvings, color, ring tone, and the color or patterns of its light can be customized! Feel free to have fun with it.

World

Expanded

Worldbuilding

While Pumpkin Hollow itself is isolated, the world beyond the barrier is fully developed and home to a great deal of fantastical species and places. In January of 2024, we hosted a temporary AU event in which characters found themselves as natives of the Pumpkin Hollow of yesteryear. Below there is a current copy of important lore from that event, which is not necessarily relevant to gameplay outside that event but may offer some context as to what is going on in the world beyond Marrow Isle. Characters would be able to find this information in books at the library.

Lore Overview Location, Location, Location. Marrow Isle is part of the Emerald Isles, which is a nation that is off the coast of but technically belonging to the continent of Leviathan. A chunk of it can be seen here:
Girl in a jacket

Not pictured is the subterranean nation of Hepogaia, which runs underneath much of Leviathan, including under the sea. It is the home of many beastfolk like arachnea, as well as dark elves and bedrock dwarves. The most major Hepogaian city beneath the Emerald Isles is Fardune, whose main entrance can be found near the Emeran capital of Victoria's Crossing.

The Emerald Isles. Originally this archipelago consisted of three nations, but an era of feudalism resulted in the nations being "unified" under the banner of one which remains in primary control today. The ruling region is that of Braxtony, with the other two being Glassighe and Anwyll. The main island is called the Grand Fairisle and it is surrounded with a plethora of smaller islands. Some places of interest in the Emerald Isles are:
  • Victoria's Crossing, the capital. A bustling, diverse city full of life and culture, though somewhat more industrial in the current day. Its architecture features a lot of height with skywalks, elevated gardens, waterfalls, and large glass windows.
  • Mournstead, a heavily industrial Braxton factory town with smoggy skies, dark architecture, and dingy streets. It is ironically located very close to one of the most beautiful forests on the Grand Fairisle, known as the Sylvan Grave.
  • Foxbridge, a modest and rustic Glassig village known for its artisanry. It's a common stop on the way to Victoria's Crossing.
  • The Cossack Mountains, a major mountain range that cuts through the northern portion of the Grand Fairisle. While there are some small human-centric towns on and around the mountains, the primary inhabitants are moon and snow elves, ice and green mountain dwarves, valley dwarves, and Hepogaians who make their homes near the entrances to the underground which are often found among the mountains. /li>
  • The Iselwood, a large Anwyllic forest in the south.
  • Gwybodus, an Anwyllic city best known for harboring the University of Magi. It is full of ornate and extremely colorful architecture.
  • Providence, the City of Brass. A beloved hometown of many mages and engineers, this city runs almost entirely on arcane clockwork constructs. It belongs to the Braxton territory and is near the coast, just across from Marrow Isle.
  • Lochshire, a well-appointed Glassig town with beautiful lake views and sprawling fruit orchards amid the stunning mansions. It is best known for being home to illustrious mogul and inventor Daphne Applegate.
  • Drakeport, a Braxton city so integrated with its river that many of its businesses and residences are floating on it. The nightlife here is vibrant.
  • Amethyst, the Gateway City, an enormous amethyst geode sticking up out of the base of the Cossack Mountains in Glassighe. The city is split between two dwarven stenholms (what dwarves call their towns), one belonging to Green Mountain Dwarves and the other belonging to Bedrock Dwarves. As such, the city is half above and half below ground.
  • Drakkoven, a major orcish city carved into a cliffside in Anwyll, above the plains of Lethmarga. Homes and businesses are caves cut between the bones of a giant, exposed, fossilized dragon skeleton on the cliffside. There is some interesting folklore about the area.
  • Cahoots, a Glassig brewing town on the coast. Famously a fun place to party and a common pilgrimage of beer and liquor fans from all over.
  • We can also come up with more in plotting! Hit me with your ideas!

Magic. Both an art and a science, magic is the understanding of the powerful energy existing within all things and the ability to manipulate it. Neil explains it in this thread. No genetic component decides who can or cannot use magic, though it is considered very cerebral and challenging to learn. Magical academies for youngsters and universities for adults exist throughout the world, but they are expensive.

Species. There are many species available for your character, both fantastical and mundane! This section will be long, so bear with me.

Humans. This is the most abundant species in this particular world, and also the most diverse. They will live just about anywhere and have a wide array of unique cultures, languages, ancestral homes, and styles of dress. They are remarkably hardy and well-rounded, but they age quicker than most. They are also willing to try eating nearly anything once.

Elves. Pointy-eared folk with a history deeply rooted in the arcane. The types of elves are so thoroughly divided that they each have highly specialized physical characteristics. For the sake of brevity, each will have a quick overview, but feel free to ask questions.
  • Sun Elves: coastal or arid living spaces preferred, resistant to heat, vulnerable to cold. Warm skin tones and hair colors. Pink, red, gold, brown, or ocean-blue eyes most commonly. Typically originate from the coast of the Dawn Sea or in the Waking Desert of Khorsheedan or Ngaba. Cannot live underground as sun exposure is required to live.
  • Moon Elves: live in any climate but prefer elevation, resistant to thin air, vulnerable to humidity. Cool skin tones. Hair starts as black or dark blue then gradually turns silver from moonlight exposure, giving the appearance of premature greying. Black, blue, or silver eyes are common. Live at high altitudes in communal fortresses known as Skyholds.
  • Dark Elves: originate from Hepogaia and have bodies highly specialized to subterranean living. Excellent dark vision, extremely sensitive to bright light. Complexions come in various shades of greyish-violet, eyes are dark jewel tones with black sclera. Protective eye gear must be worn in daylight. Special dietary restrictions.
  • Wood Elves: forest dwellers who live in treehouses or nomadic settlements. Excellent survivalists, cannot become lost in woodland places. Complexions, eye colors, hair colors all tend to be in earth tones. Frequently displaced by industrialism. Often hostile toward non-elves.
  • Snow Elves: strongly prefer colder climates, particularly the Cossack Mountains, extremely resistant to cold, vulnerable to heat. Always have starkly pale hair and eyes. Driven from low tundra by Braxton settlements and remain extremely hostile towards them. It is not uncommon for snow elf clans to kill Braxton soldiers on sight. Very neighborly with Moon Elves, though.
  • High Elves: class traitors, old money. Originally derived from coastal Sun Elves who became successful merchants and assimilated with well-to-do human society. Look fairly similar to Sun Elves still but have lost much of their inherent strengths and drawbacks due to indoorsy lifestyle. Still get uncomfortable when cold, though.
Dwarves. Short-statured folk (not to be confused for humans with dwarfism) who have a reputation for warfaring due to their participation in the War of Ages. Widely renowned for their unique cultural practices surrounding the keeping of their hair, especially their beards. (And yes, dwarven women absolutely have beards.) Dwarves live in a variety of locations, inhabiting fortress-towns called stenholms. Each stenholm belongs to a particular clan with a unique lifestyle, described briefly below:
  • Ice Mountain Clan: lives in the highest frosted peaks. Especially hardy with impeccable survival skills. Talented hunters and blacksmiths. Isolationists that do not care to be bothered.
  • Green Mountain Clan: live in the lower mountain regions, sometimes inside mountains. Known for brewing and foraging. Have a reputation for being a little bit smug.
  • Hill Clan: pastoral folk who are often tenders of livestock and farmers. Well known for their food. Did not participate in the War of Ages and are quite proud of that fact, much to the dismay of their brethren. Very welcoming of outsiders.
  • Valley Clan: artisans, traders, and artistic sorts. Have been known to be somewhat self-centered. Have a strange manner of speaking that consists of a unique accent and incomprehensible slang.
  • Bedrock Clan: Hepogaian dwarves who live either fully or partially underground. Miners and stoneworkers. Not unfriendly, but tend to keep to themselves.
Halflings. So named because they are half the height of the average human, halflings originate from Glassighe and are believed to have come from fae ancestry. While all-halfling villages aren't unheard of, many halflings do just fine amid humans, though they tend to prefer more rustic homes. Despite their size, they are known to eat double what the average human might on a daily basis and there are many foodies among their ranks. They are also known for their folk music.

Gnomes. Smaller than dwarves or halflings and even more fae-adjacent in origin, gnomes are a rare but generally cheerful species believed to have good luck and for whom magic is second nature. They tend to live in small villages exclusively for gnomes which are overwhelmingly full of whimsy. Gnomes have a habit of "collecting names," which is to say they will nickname their friends and add that nickname to their full name for the rest of their life. More middle names is said to be the sign of a life filled with friends and experiences. If a gnome gives you a nickname, it should be considered a token of profound friendship.

Orcs. Green- and grey-skinned people who were once the opponents of the dwarves in the War of Ages. Propaganda about them gave them a reputation for being violent, bloodthirsty, warmongering dullards, but this reputation has since been disproven and relations with orcs are on the mend. Many still live in ancestral villages on the plains of Lethmarga, but some live in blended towns and cities as well. They are best known for their artisan bonecraft, and many orcish scrimshaw artists are among the finest in the world.

Beastfolk.Humanoid or otherwise sapient beast-people. This includes such individuals as arachnea (subterannean spider-people), centaurs, harpies, lizardfolk, dragonborn, and more.

Tieflings. Tieflings are a strange sort. Despite being technically a species all their own, they are actually a particular kind of mixed-species. When humans fraternize with infernal entities, there is a chance that such a union may yield a tiefling offspring, who then could pass their species on to other children they have with a human partner or other humanoid. The chance for tiefling descendants will remain in the bloodline until it ends and is recessive, even skipping numerous generations only to appear in a family that has only produced human children for the past 200 years. Demonic ancestry, however, does not necessarily imply demonic behavior. There are plenty of perfectly pleasant tieflings just as there are plenty of evil humans.

Faefolk. An umbrella term for members of the fae such as fairies, changelings, pixies, banshees, dullahan, satyrs, nymphs, dryads, merfolk, and more. Typically belong to either the Seelie (benevolent) or Unseelie (malevolent) court.

Miscellaneous Lore. Some other things worth noting is that the current king of the Emerald Isles is Ferdinand Emerick Marchbanks, IV, and the queen is Elaine Millicent Davenger Marchbanks. The king is a polarizing subject, as the Emerald Isles is going through an industrial era which is highly profitable for many people but destructive to the landscape. Another interesting bit of lore is that the goddesses are believed in worldwide but thought to have different appearances and folklore depending upon the culture you ask.

Local PC Application

Hello! If you've received a direct link to this page by a mod, that means that you've been offered a role as a local Pumpkin Hollow citizen as a player character. This is a type of PC that is available by invitation only, and has a few special rules.

Players of local PCs will need to be open to collaborating more extensively with mods on their character's backstory and have the utmost commitment to following and enriching the established lore. Additionally, applicants should be committed, long-term players who are highly unlikely to drop, as it is much harder to write out these characters from the game. They are more akin to NPCs than they are "offworld" PCs. Obviously life happens and there's no way to completely guarantee that a player will never need to drop out of a game, but we are mitigating potential drops by looking for enthusiastic players with a demonstrable history of commitment, activity, and trustworthiness during the game.

Once you've been cleared for launch by the mod team, fill out the application below, and have it confirmed, you'll be granted access to the "Local News" channel in our Discord server. This will allow you to easily chat with the players of other local PCs and NPCs about lore, handwaved history, potential game spoilers for other players, and fun surprises for the rest of the cast!

Without further ado, the form is below! Please reply to the application thread so that we are notified of your application. Thanks for your continued awesomeness!

Meme Submission Form

Meme Submissions

Hello everyone! We've recently added a new activity to our lineup--- memes! On a roughly monthly basis, we'd like to post a relatively simple meme for some low-stakes fun. We would also love for these to be at least partially player-driven! However, we also want to spare your inboxes the pain of overwhelming notifications. To counter this issue, we'll post memes via the moderator account to @ph-memes on your behalf, with proper credit of course.

How canon these memes are will vary somewhat due to the lack of text messaging or forums in Pumpkin Hollow. Some memes may simply be OOC, but perhaps others are interactive bulletin-board posts, chain letters, group gatherings for community bonding, or retconned entirely--- we'll leave that up to your imagination!

To submit a meme suggestion, please fill out the form below in a comment underneath the SUBMISSIONS thread. This way we'll get notified when you send something in! The meme can be anything within reason, though on the off chance we find something to be a bad fit, we will reserve the right to decline a submission. You may submit your meme idea with code already attached if you would like, or you can simply send us plain text and allow the mods to code it as we see fit. If you have a specific timeframe in mind for when you would like it to be posted, please feel free to include it. We can't guarantee that we will be able to post it at the ideal time as we are making an effort to stagger them appropriately with other memes and events, but we will do our best to get it as close as possible! Posting order is first-come-first-served.

We look forward to seeing your ideas!

Bestiary

BLUE ISLAND CRAB
catch of the day
With mating season in the spring, the Blue Island Crabs come to spawn in late summer. The males come to shore with clutches of eggs to bury in the warm sands and they later hatch, covering the beaches in tiny crablings. They stay onshore for weeks, hunting and gathering materials to take with them back into the sea. The residents of Marrow Isle have discovered these crabs will swipe anything they can get their claws around; from writing pens to small pieces of jewelry, to everything else in between.

After a few weeks the fledgling crabs migrate out to sea, now strong enough to survive the harsh currents, their shells toughened against smaller predators. They do make for a good source of protein, often simply boiled and seasoned, or used in soups and stocks to enhance summer flavors. It’s currently the only way the villagers can cull the crab numbers and hope the crustaceans don’t make off with everything that’s not nailed down.

There’s a rumor among sailors about a larger crab further out in the ocean, but with the curse drawing a line around Marrow Isle surely this is nothing more than a drunken sailor’s tale.
BRUTOKS
become one with the forest
Small, tree-like, and very angry, these little woodland spirits originate from an old folktale from a region called Anwyll about a forest that had been burned down by soldiers. Why they've started appearing on Marrow Isle can only be guessed at, but when they do the Brutoks tend to bring all sorts of trouble ranging from harmless puzzle-based pranks to terrifying kidnappings. Victims of the Brutoks have been recorded being turned into trees, leading to the unfortunate victim’s death. There are theories that this is how the spirits create more of themselves but nothing has been proven as of yet.

On Marrow Isle the Brutoks made their first appearance near the Lockwood Forest and moved in towards Pumpkin Hollow. They seemed to roam in small packs, becoming more difficult to overcome with larger numbers. They chose their victims by sight and it’s said if you lay eyes on one, knowingly or not, they will hunt you relentlessly. Brutoks can be dispersed by solving their puzzles or the more mundane ways of throwing, kicking, or setting them ablaze. After a few weeks the Brutoks seemed to retreat back into the woods, but they can still be found by the unwary traveler.
THE PINE DEVIL
king of monsters
Sometimes referred to as the Pumpkin Hollow Howler. A tall, imposing figure with gangly arms ending in clawed hands, unguligrade legs, a long thin tail, a pair of tattered leathery wings set upon its back making the fiend capable of flight, and a large equine-like head with a set large fangs and a crown of horns sprouted around its ears. His eyes glow blue in the dark, sometimes the only warning its prey has before an attack. First spotted between fifteen to twenty years ago there is still scant little known about his territory or preferred habitat, only that the Pine Devil has a disturbing penchant for stalking its prey before devouring them. Not even the village boundaries seem safe when the Howler is on the prowl as the creature has been seen many times before stalking down our cobblestone streets.

Surviving encounters with the beast is notably rare, even after Marrow Isle became shrouded in curse. This just means the Pine Devil is free to stalk the same prey again and again. There are times when the Howler seems more content to hunt large game in the forests, leaving the villagers alone. But like returning tidal waters, it invariably returns, leaving fear and death in its wake.
THE RIVERWALKER
let the chase begin
With a large, spider-like body, the River Walker will instinctively touch into many deep-seated fears in most people. Grotesque and bulbous, its form is not meant for any kind of speed, spindly chitinous arms serve to propel the creature through impossibly tight and narrow rocky passages, its head taking on the form of a bloated, drowned woman. Her face eternally frozen in a vile grin, framed by pale blue lips, a ragged, limp, white hair.

The River Walker makes its home in a specific location; the Paring River. More specifically the bridge that crosses over it, the only thoroughfare through to Crane’s Ridge and the hunting areas beyond. Beneath the bridge its victims will awake, in a dark, claustrophobic cave system while being hunted. Some say the River Walker stalks its prey for hours and hours, taunting them to develop the flavor of fear before closing in for the feast.

It’s said that the River Walker is a singular hunter, targeting lone travelers. Unable to deal with two or more, one can hope for a slim chance of escape if they find someone in the same predicament.

SIRENS
a new spin on seafood
With a human-like upper torso ending in a sleek fish tail, the Siren makes for a formidable creature to encounter for sailor and land-lover alike. Their hands end in wicked claws, their mouths full of sharp teeth, but upon first glance they have a strikingly beautiful appearance. Coupled with an alluring song that seems to draw its victims in, a Siren will never hesitate to drown or bite into its prey.

Recently it was discovered that the Sirens could even take on an entirely human-like appearance, walking on land only a short distance from the water. There’s been reports of them also taking on the appearance of a departed loved one, although this fact remains unconfirmed.

Sirens do migrate and leave Marrow Isle’s waters after a few summers months have passed, before the bitter sting of winter sets in. Be wary on the beaches and plug your ears if you hear a lilting song beckoning you out into the water...
More to Come!
Stay Tuned
More monsters will be added as Pumpkin Hollow develops!

Religion

Religion

Overview

Pumpkin Hollow and the world beyond it has only one major religion, which centers around a quartet of nature goddesses who each represent a season of the year and a realm of nature (Land, Sea, Sky, Beyond). Though different places and different cultures have their own unique interpretations of the goddesses, and there are some sects who venerate minor gods alongside the Four Mothers, these maternal deities are present across the entirety of the world due to their active presence in the world. In Pumpkin Hollow, there was radio silence from them for quite some time, but in recent months they have begun making appearances once more.

For a quick rundown of the goddesses and their teachings, visit the Temple of Sacred Roots or their journal, [personal profile] psalmofseasons. Their inboxes can also be found on their journal, for those that wish to reach out to them.

Conversely, the goddesses also have evil counterparts that the Temple avoids talking about--- the infernal Demon King and Princes. The royal family of demons changes its major players every few centuries through a succession ritual known for bringing misfortune to mortals, and it would seem that this ritual has begun in earnest in Pumpkin Hollow. Demons can also be reached out to via their journal, [personal profile] daemoniumexmachina, where more information about them can be found.

YORICK ABERDEEN
alas, poor yorick
Mayor Poe's helpful assistant Yorick Aberdeen is always happy to lend a hand with anything she or anyone else needs. Whether it's greeting newcomers at the dock, fetching a cup of coffee for someone in Town Hall, providing directions, or getting suckered into hauling firewood for Miss Leeds, if Yorick doesn't have time then he will gladly make it. An unfortunate result of his inability to say no, combined with his overall clumsiness and poor decision-making, is that he is incredibly danger-prone. Presently he holds the island's record for most deaths in a single month. Despite this, he remains cheerful and chatty, and always has a story to share. He also seems particularly fond of the mayor, though it's unclear to what extent.

Yorick is 34 years old and was born on April 1st. He is an Aries and a Spring.

Played by Jude Law
DAHLIA LEEDS
rich, brilliant, beautiful, doomed
Born and raised in Pumpkin Hollow, Dahlia is the heiress to the illustrious manor of the family who founded the town and the youngest of thirteen siblings. Her very birth would portend misfortune, as her mother died in childbirth and each of her family members would perish one by one throughout her life, leaving behind only Dahlia. It is believed that she was only spared due to the curse of deathlessness placed on the island before her fate could claim her, but who's to say? These days, Dahlia spends her time working hard on the Town Council, running the Pumpkin Hollow Historical Society, or sequestered in her estate which overlooks the town. Gregarious, scholarly, and helpful, but with a distant aura.

Dahlia is 23 years old and she was born on the 21st of September. She is a Virgo and an Autumn.

NEIL WEST
livin' the dream
Originally from the mainland, Neil came over from a neighboring country in search of a place that would be receptive to his unique brand of psychological treatment. His practice, "West Dream Analytics," used to operate out of a clinic in town but has since been moved to his house for financial reasons. His paranormal abilities and his rejection of the church haven't gained him much favor, but he has genuinely helped many people with his unusual therapeutic methods. His organization, the Ocularum, also meets at West Dream Analytics and has some interesting ideas about how to counteract the island's curse. In spite of his somewhat mixed reputation, Neil is a jovial and patient person with a gentle demeanor.

Neil is 38 years old and was born on June 12th. He is a Gemini and a Summer.

FULL PROFILE | THE OCULARUM

Played by Rami Malek
ELIAS COLDWOOD
Like Ships in the Night
Dr. Elias Coldwood is an occult scientist and paranormal biologist, as well as a former seafarer whose vessel crashed on Marrow Isle some years ago. With the loss of his crew, he found purpose in researching the oddities of the island, and continues to study the strange lifeforms and magic found. He has shockingly little regard for his personal wellbeing but is an incredibly talented mage and boundlessly enthusiastic researcher. It is also noteworthy that he and Neil West were previously married but have since divorced. He's a bit cagey on the details about that.

Elias' age is not widely known, but he was born on April 9th. He is an Aries and a Spring.

THE GODDESSES
The Wheel of the Year Turns
The Goddesses of this world, as they are worshipped by the Temple of Sacred Roots and its followers, are very much real and can be quite responsive for the right people, under the right circumstances. Each represents a season of the year and a realm of the world (Land, Sea, Sky, Beyond). Every person has one goddess with whom they could find a degree of resonance, if they so desire. Exploring that connection could result in a useful magical boon. See their profile for details on each individual goddess.

HELLEN POE
it's a living
The frazzled and well-intentioned mayor of Pumpkin Hollow who is loved and pitied in equal measure. When not at town hall attempting to manage the mayhem, Mayor Poe can typically be found on her porch swing at home, drinking a hot cup of coffee and questioning her life choices. Despite the trouble, though, Hellen is a capable leader and very cool under fire. She also genuinely loves her home, quirks and all. Resourceful, caring, determined, and a lot of fun to talk to on the rare occasion where she's had enough sleep. Back when she had a modicum of free time she even used to paint! Perhaps the influx of new residents to help support the town can finally assuage a few of her worries.

Hellen is 32 years old and was born on October 19th. She is a Libra and an Autumn.

Played by Nathalie Emmanuel
DEGAS CLAYTON
makeshift holy man
Degas Clayton was not always the reverend of the Temple of Sacred Roots. Once just a member of the congregation, Degas' tranquil demeanor, gentle charisma, and penchant for fatherly advice made him the clear choice when his predecessor mysteriously went missing. He was extremely reluctant to take on this role, but when the goddesses call upon you for your services, it's deeply discouraged to refuse. Degas is first and foremost a family man despite the fact that his family is no longer present on the island. Therefore he is very likely to create family for himself among the people around him. If you're looking for sound advice, a shoulder to lean on, or a riveting story about days gone by, Degas will gladly provide.

Degas is 57 years old and was born on December 31st. He is a Capricorn and a Winter.

ELSIE
how about a game of hide and seek?
Hear something in the trees? Feel like you're being watched in the forest? While it's entirely possible that you're about to be attacked by some manner of monsters, if you feel a less threatening presence then your audience may well be the elusive Elsie. Precious little about her is known by the general public, but most are aware that she leads a group of forest-dwelling societal rejects that rarely interact with the rest of the town. Capricious and fae-like, she also has a reputation for being a bit of a prankster and having a fondness for shiny trinkets. It is difficult to gain her trust or that of her followers. However, the fruits of this endeavor may well prove worth the effort. Leave a gift or letter at the Gathering Tree, and you may yet have some luck.

Elsie's age and date of birth are unknown. Apparently, she is an Autumn.

TEDDY PENNYBURROW
My family tree's losing all its leaves
Theodore Pennyburrow is a fox beastkin from a town called Cahoots (which is a very fun place to say that one is in) and was born into a family of lawyers with no aptitude for legal work, making him the most charming family disappointment in the Emerald Isles. He currently running the Autumn Leaves Boarding House for children without guardians and is well loved by the youngsters staying there. Upbeat and friendly, he is every child's favorite teacher and guardian. Yes, you may pet him. Respectfully. And just a little bit. Don't go overboard.

Teddy is 38 years old and he was born on September 8th. He is a Virgo and an Autumn.

INFERNAL ROYALTY
The Machinations of Devils
In nearly equal measure to the goddesses, this island is influenced by demons and their ilk. King Eligos, the Great Betrayer, and his three sons, Prince Efrain, Prince Mendel, and Prince Aster, each have a court of servants. And each of them has domain over a certain vice or societal ill, which they seek to feed. These demons can also aid you with magical boons, and can offer much more extravagant gifts. But beware, they come at a cost. See their full profile for additional details on each demon royal.

Demonic & Monstrous

Daphne
Marquise of Lust
A member of the Court of the Dark Feast, Daphne holds domain over the exploitation of the female body and sexual desire for profit. She is able to multiply herself infinitely, but each copy becomes progressively weaker until she returns to a single form.
NIGHTINGALE
Earl of Blood
A member of the Court of the Dark Feast, Nightingale holds domain over acts of egregious violence and sadistic euphoria. He is, for all intents and purposes, Aster's muscle. He's also a very good chef despite his massive, clawed hands.
CLAUNTHE
Duchess of Debt
A member of the Court of the Dark Feast, Claunthe is a relatively minor player in the infernal hierarchy but is working her way up by feeding her domain in Pumpkin Hollow. Nicknamed "Our Lady of Legbreakers", she holds domain over everything you can't afford, and what you'll do to get it. Additionally, Claunthe is the mother of Deirdre Breugaire and has her own inbox.
CASPIAN
Duke of Heartbreakers
A member of the Court of Betrayal, Caspian serves King Eligos as an incubus. His preferred tactic is to love them and leave them, treating his victims as cherished lovers and fulfilling their deepest desires, then feeding of the pain they feel when he vanishes. He can also take on other appearances, painting the faces of past lovers or unrequited crushes on his blank face. He is also the biological father of Dawn, the tiefling daughter of Tarantulas (a player character).
Nephera
Margravine of Temptation
A succubus in the Court of Betrayal, Nephera's goal is to tempt others to unfaithfulness to their partner, or at least create the illusion of it. She will be whatever you want, whatever you need, whatever you think you need--- whatever it takes to lure you in.
Daanon
Lord of Cutthroats
A member of the Court of Betrayal, Daanon often operates effectively as a incubus and courtesan, but his true domain is that of the opportunistic oathbreaker, the scavenger, the ones who stab their friends in the back merely because the opportunity to undercut them arose.
Reyelle
Duchess of the Neverloved
A member of the Court of Betrayal, Reyelle sometimes operates in the capacity of a succubus, but only because it is conducive to her domain over the heartless lover, manipulative friend, or selfish parent. She represents all who play pretend at love so they can see through the cracks in your armor into your soul, and use the deepest parts of you for personal gain.
SEEMINGLY
Thane of the Capricious
A member of the Court of Fools, Seemingly is a mysterious demon with a rotating head that bears four masks. Each face has its own name, voice, personality, and gender identity. Seemingly's domain is that of the intangible, the ever-shifting, the abstract, the falsehood built on the incomplete pictures built by a million minds that is reality.
BLANCHE
Baroness of Blank
This member of the Court of Fools has not yet been introduced, but she holds domain over lost memories, forgotten items, and slippery minds.
Smiling Jack
Killer comedian
Not a demon, but in fact a malevolent spirit that serves under the Court of Fools in return for a physical form. He is the subject of a folktale that Dahlia enjoys telling and enjoys using his corporeal form to commit violence and tell horrible jokes.
Baritone
Viscount of Suffering
A member of the Court of Sorrow's Song, Baritone had his body mutilated and filled with pipes. His singing voice sounds like an orchestra and every note is excruciatingly painful. He represents pointless agony, pain without meaning.
Sonata
Contessa of false comfort
A member of the Court of Sorrow's Song, Sonata represents the creeping guilt of pointless distractions in times of suffering, and the fresh pain of grief that follows when the moment of reprieve ends.
Deceased

Japhet Leeds
Father of Pumpkin Hollow
Played by Christoph Waltz.

Dahlia's late father, Japhet was the patriarch of the massive Leeds family and the founder of Pumpkin Hollow. He died just before the barrier went up, having been eaten by the Pine Devil.
Jane Leeds
O Mother, where art thou?
Played by Patricia Clarkson.

The late mother of all thirteen Leeds children. She died giving birth to Dahlia, the youngest of her children.
Henry Leeds
Double Tap
Played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

One of Jane and Japhet's children. Henry was one of the oldest and one of the last to pass away, and ran a monster-hunting company while he was alive. He died in the line of duty.
Harriet Leeds-Brenning
Down with her ship
Played by Imogen Poots.

One of Jane and Japhet's children. She was, in her time, the youngest mayor in the history of Pumpkin Hollow. She died during the island's first Parade Day.
Linette Brenning
Paper Horses
Played by Emmy Rossum.

Harriet's late wife and alchemist. Her ghost has been known to appear to those that can see them around the cemetery. She went missing, and the circumstances of her death are unknown.
Jonah Leeds
Look Alive
Played by Jordan Prentice.

The second-youngest Leeds sibling, and one of Dahlia's closest confidantes. Well known for his adventurous spirit, he was constantly on some daring excursion into the wilderness. Notably, he was a human with medical dwarfism (as opposed to being a member of the dwarven species) and had a lot of specialized equipment that contributes to Pumpkin Hollow's accessibility technology even still.
Samuel Leeds
Spirited Conversationalist
Played by Cole Sprouse.

Yet another one of the Leeds clan, Samuel died relatively young. He was very sick from a young age and spent much of his life battling illness. He now exists as a chatty spirit outside his family's mausoleum. If you can see ghosts, drop him a line.
Merrick Gladwyn
Spoke for the Trees
Played by Collin Farell.

The priest who led the Temple of Sacred Roots prior to Degas. A very well-respected member of the community who was like a father and brother to many. He was the victim of a grisly murder apparently performed by cultists.
Oubliette
Majordomo of Misdirection
A member of the Court of Fools who was killed by Agent Jean.
Not currently pictured: The remaining Leeds siblings (Alice, Oscar, Violet, Jasper, Adelaide, Esther, and Abel), Elsie's mother (Yesenia Helvig), Former Mayor Christopher Larkin.

Hiatus & Drop

Hiatus & Drop

Hiatus
Need to take a break? No worries, life happens. On the Hiatus comment, please post the following:

You may take hiatuses for one month at a time, but may request an extension if needed. If you need an extension you are responsible for communicating that with a mod! During this time you will not be expected to complete an activity check and will be given one month's base stipend with no bonuses. If you need to take a break that is less than two weeks long, an official hiatus is not required as long as your activity check is complete.

Drop
Sometimes life really happens. If you need to leave, we'd appreciate it if you'd take the time to fill out a notice on our Drop comment! Thank you!

Please note that players who drop from the game will be removed from the Discord server unless other arrangements are made, but if you'd like to lurk you can always message a moderator!

FAQ

FAQ

A hub for all your questions! This ever-evolving page has the answers to any questions we anticipate being asked as a base with more being added as-needed!
SETTING QUESTIONS What is Pumpkin Hollow? Pumpkin Hollow is a horror game with a comedy edge and an underlying mystery, set on a fictional island suffering from a terrible curse. Characters from other worlds come here after enduring near-death experiences as a form of purgatory, tasked with beginning a strange new life in order to try and find their way home. Earn a living, gossip with your neighbors, and deal with magic and monsters ranging from terrifying to benign!

What happens when my character wakes up? The premise tab on our home page is a great place to start, giving you all the context for how your journey begins! But to briefly sum up: you wake up in a strange room with a white-haired woman who offers you an opportunity. You aren't dead yet, but you've had a near death experience that could kill you. Take up a new life in a far away land and find your purpose there in order to return to the life you had, or decline and accept your demise. Accepting will take you to Marrow Isle and from there you will start fresh in the little town there while seeking answers on your new home, and how to return to your old one.

Do I have to play a character that has died canonically? Nope! You can play any character that is capable of dying, and can base their arrival here on a canon death, a canon near-death experience, or invent a non-canon event if you want to.

What if my character doesn't accept the white-haired woman's proposal for a new life? Game Over! Unfortunately characters who would decline the offer to come to Pumpkin Hollow just wouldn't go. In order to play Pumpkin Hollow, you should app in a character who is willing to accept the offer, however begrudgingly. Characters who would say no outright probably aren't a good fit anyway.

Where are we? Marrow Isle is a fairly large island covered in dense forest. It features a small mountain range, high cliffs, and a sizeable expanse of countryside. The lone town on the island is Pumpkin Hollow itself. It appears to be in the style of a European village, with Tudor-style architecture all piled on top of itself. For more details on the village and surrounding island, our Locations page is a great resource.

What is the village center like/layout of the island? How big is this place? It's a pretty big island and would take a few days to walk it from end to end on foot. Thankfully, there are boats, horses, a trolley system, and a small train circuit to help with travel. While early cars do exist in this world, their presence isn't common on a remote island like Marrow Isle.

What are the townspeople like? Tired, mostly. You would be too if you were dealing with various monsters of the week and starving to death, repeatedly, for the last handful of years. In general, they are welcoming, but a bit wary. Most are hearty folk with one trade or another, who came to this place to improve their lives. Of course that doesn’t rule out a surly villager or two who doesn’t take kindly to the strange new faces around the island. Feel free to sprinkle in villager interactions to flavor your threads, you don’t need to contact a mod for permission. This does include Yorick and the Mayor, as they’re simple mechanical npcs with a set purpose of either welcoming you or assigning you a job.

However, should you wish to interact with one of the played NPCs please contact the mod player in question!

Speaking of those played NPCs, who are they? For these characters, the term "NPC" is a bit of a misnomer. In reality, they are fully interactable original characters who are highly relevant to the game's plot! They're the leaders of the organizations that will form the basis of a loose faction-like system that we will gradually be implementing in the game. Degas Clayton is the preacher at the Temple of Sacred Roots of Our Four Earthly Mothers, and will gladly help you get settled and teach you about the local religion. Dahlia Leeds is the last surviving member of Pumpkin Hollow's founding family and a helpful research buff, whose Historical Society is great at digging up information. Neil West is the mild-mannered leader of the Ocularum, an occult interest group attempting to unravel the mysteries of Pumpkin Hollow's curse. And lastly, players will meet the elusive Elsie, an off-the-grid philosopher and pariah who knows the woods like the back of her hand. Each is played by one of your friendly moderators, so feel free to reach out to the appropriate mod if you're interested in chatting with any of them!

There are factions? Does this mean I have to pick a side? These aren't quite factions in the sense you might be used to seeing in Dreamwidth games, which is why we tend to refer to them as organizations. Joining one requires an initiation of sorts and comes with perks, and you are limited to one at a time. However that doesn't bar you from social interaction with members of other groups! The leaders of some of them do not get along but that's their business. Think of them as paths you can take on your adventure, rather than proper factions.

Wait… Do I have to get a job? Yes, but also no! Should you wish there’s a variety of options but also you can simply crash at the inn and collect a barebones paycheck every month. There are pros and cons to each, but you can change your job by having a chat with the Mayor easily.

What if my character is a workaholic? Can they get TWO jobs? Considering the level of technology in Pumpkin Hollow most jobs take longer than we're used to in modern times. Which is a long way of saying no, you can only have one job at a time, but you can change whenever you'd like!

Do I have to do math? A little bit, yes! But we have a ledger sheet set up that should help with the process and simple addition/subtraction for food and supplies and the like. Nothing gets into the minutiae of purchasing, just broad strokes to give you a framework to work in. Mods are also prepared to help with crunching numbers as-needed!

So we get a paycheck, does that mean we can buy rewards? Not in the traditional journal-based game sense. You won’t be able to gain additional powers through the buying might of coin. You can buy better equipment for your job, upgrade your home, get new clothes or trinkets, and much more at the shops! However be aware that there may be some limitations due to Marrow Isle being somewhat remote.

Okay, but there has to be a network, right? While this hadn't been the case for much of the game, this has recently updated! A demonic deal from a player now brings you Sending Stones, which can bring your voice to any other stone, all the way across the island! Beyond that direct connection, however, your best bet for wide-reaching communication is the Community Message Board.

So what’s the technology like in this world, then? Think cusp of the industrial revolution with a dash of steampunk. Most of the machinery runs on steam or good old-fashioned man-power, books are still printed by press or tediously by hand, streetlights in the village square are rudimentary electric, and houses tend to have a small amount of electric lighting along with oil-burning lanterns. Indoor plumbing thankfully has been invented.

I’m from a technologically advanced world, could I build something here as a substitute for the tech I'm used to? Fat chance, Tony Stark! But jokes aside, you can innovate to a degree but keep it within reason and relatively period appropriate. Nothing game-breaking either please! You'll have to keep your supersuits, flying cars, and video games in the future where they belong.
GAME MECHANICS Is there an overarching plot? Hold onto your britches, because yes there is! A lot of secrets are hiding around the island that allude to what happened before you arrived and how the island got as bad as it did, so the first step will be to explore as you settle into your strange new world.

Is it possible to die in Pumpkin Hollow? Yes and no. Characters can die in Pumpkin Hollow an unlimited amount of times and return to life each time, but you are deeply inconvenienced for doing so. You may lose resources, are incapacitated for some time, often come back to life in strange places, and more. When you die, you will have to submit a cause of death and a resurrection plan which mods must approve (or you can ask to be surprised by us!) and may be subject to additional setbacks depending on the circumstances of the death. More details on death can be found here.

What happens to a character during hiatus or if they drop? You can decide any narrative excuse you like for a hiatus, as long as it makes sense. Prolonged illness or injury, depressive episode, demonic possession that caused them to run off into the woods and eat rocks for a month, whatever works for you!

A drop, however, will result in a specific event. In the middle of the night your character will feel an irresistible pull to wake from their sleep and return to the docks, where they are awaited by the ferry. Something about the status of their well-being in their original life has changed. Whether that be a miracle recovery or an untimely demise is hard to say, but whatever it is has rendered the white-haired woman's offer null and void, and the character must now return to their own world.

If a new player wants to pick up a character that was formerly played and then dropped by a previous player, they will have no memories of their previous time on Marrow Isle. The lore reason for this is that this person is simply a version of that character from a slightly different timeline.

If my character has powers, will they be nerfed or removed? Not unless their powers are game-breaking. If your character can shoot fire out of their hands, that doesn't impact the stakes, it just makes things somewhat more on fire. However, if your character can become completely invincible or is deathless, then they will probably need to have some adjustments made. Characters that can fly will also need limitations, as it would be game-breaking for them to be able to escape Marrow Isle.

What about non-humans? Will they need to be made human? Nope! No forced humanization. The locals are used to seeing all kinds of monsters and beasties. However, Pumpkin Hollow does take place in a period setting and so science fiction characters with futuristic designs may experience some cosmetic changes to help them fit in. For example, a robotic-looking individual may appear as an old-fashioned automaton. Oversized or undersized characters will also need to be made roughly person-sized.

How are Activity Checks handled? All that is required for Activity Check is a simple check-in to ensure that no one has disappeared off the face of the planet. Slow months happen to everyone, especially over the holidays, and we're no sticklers! Higher levels of activity are strongly encouraged and incentivized, however! More details on our Activity Check page.

How do I get activity bonuses and incentives? Our AC page covers this in greater detail but the gist is that for every unique thread that contains 10 tags (total, as in presumably 5 tags from you and 5 from your partner) dated within that month, you get bonus in-game currency. The more time you spend talking and adventuring with your neighbors, the faster you can Stardew Valley your way into your dream home!

How often can I use a thread for extra rewards? If a thread has at least 10 tags dated in one month and is continued and ends up with 10 tags for the following month, you can use it for both months. One super-long thread is still a lot of activity, so hey, credit where credit is due!

Can I bang these barbies together? Can my character be pregnant? Pumpkin Hollow is sex-friendly but not sex-focused, so any NSFW threads need to be warned for in a log or comment header. Threads of a violent or forced sexual nature are not allowed! Please see our Community Standards on the main page for additional details on disallowed or sensitive content, because we do take that pretty seriously.

Characters can certainly become pregnant, but it's not advisable. The island is dangerous and your objective is ultimately to return to your original life. Some characters may ultimately decide to stay in Pumpkin Hollow, but that's something to consider.

Can my character make protective charms or wards with their powers or by other means? They can but the charm or ward won't be 100% effective even if it might have been back home. Think of it more like rolling with advantage in terms of dice.

Are there any basic supplies my character can use/borrow? Yes! Town hall has some very basic weapons, sword, axes, shields, bows and arrows, etc, and very basic armor (think like heavy leathers, maybe some janky chain-mail if you're lucky). Characters are free to borrow these items but be aware that they'll break rather easily! You'll definitely want to save up and buy a good sturdy weapon if your character plans on hunting frequently. You do not need mod permission to borrow a set, just keep it reasonable.

Can characters working the same job (i.e. Fisherman, Enforcer, etc) pool their money for upgrades? No, they can't. However, money could be pooled for other items, or simply gifted. Just hit us up if something strikes your fancy.

Do invading monsters/plagues/curses/etc go away after awhile? In Pumpkin Hollow the curses seem to ebb and flow. For instance, the brutok invasion will start to taper off, but they can still be found in the deep forest. They might return as before, they might not! The same goes for most things on Marrow Isle, unless explicitly stated by the mods so feel free to have your character bump into a brutok later on down the road if you'd like!

What's the deal with the shady merchant? If you're interested in regaining an item from home, just reach out to the mods to discuss it. This may take some more doing if we're not as canon-familiar with something but we'll sort it out. We'll sporadically add new items in. Any canon-regains will be fairly damaged to the point where using them will prove difficult and generally be an outrageous price, but they don't leave the shop till purchased, which can be done via special purchase requests.
APPLICATION QUESTIONS Who can I app into the game? Canon characters, original characters, CRAU from other writing games, tabletop/MMO characters created by you, canon AU characters, reasonably different series duplicate characters (i.e. different Marvel versions of the same character), fandom OCs with no direct connection to a canon character, and blank-slate characters (such as the Warden from Dragon Age). MMO protagonists such as the Commander from Guild Wars 2 are also accepted, provided no preconceived relationships are forced onto any other characters from the same canon without prior discussion from all players involved.

All characters must have a canon or headcanon event that led to their death or near-death at the time of their canon point in order to ICly be able to enter Pumpkin Hollow.

Are AU versions of characters acceptable? What about CRAU? Absolutely, but they need to make a reasonable amount of narrative sense. The details are laid out more specifically in our character claim post, but as long as you can figure out a lore reason for your character to be here that's more or less logical then it isn't a problem. The biggest concern is that all characters come from circumstances where they're capable of dying so that the stakes of our premise work as intended.

My CRAU character has special powers from their last game, can they use those? Same rules apply as other characters with powers. Game-breaking powers would be nerfed, but within reason, yes.

Can my character have multiple CRAUs? Yes, again with the stipulation that it make narrative sense and not be game-breaking.

How does apping in teenage or child characters work? This allowance was recently added (April 2024) by popular vote among players. Prior to this, only adult characters were permitted to app in. As such, please be patient with us as we work out the kinks in this new feature.

As it currently stands, here's how we're handling things: characters over the age of 18 (or adulthood for their species) will be readily accepted into the game, barring incident, while younger characters will be subject to somewhat more rigorous review by the mods to make sure they're a good fit. Age, independence, and life experience are the main things we look at. There are no hard and fast limits for any of these things, but we'll use the combined information to determine if they're a good fit. We're pretty lenient! We just want to make sure no one's throwing a helpless kid into a traumatic situation.

Additionally, there are some special rules for teenage/child characters. First off, all conduct between characters of differing age groups needs to be kept age-appropriate and relationship-appropriate. Romantic or sexual interactions between adults and minors is unacceptable (except between characters who are extremely close in age, such as an 18 year old and a 17 year old). Sexual conversation should also remain appropriate and non-graphic (i.e. "The Talk" would be okay but discussing sexual exploits in detail would not.) Older teenagers engaging in a sexual relationship with someone of similar age must fade to black. These rules are non-negotiable and breaking them, even off-comm, will result in disciplinary action proportional to the severity.

Finally, please be aware that many players find children in extreme duress or traumatic situations to be triggering. Please stay on top of content warnings in horror-centric threads. The younger your character is, the more this applies. My character is a 5000 year old mage in the body of a young– Do not pass go. Do not collect 200 Brass. Go directly to jail.

Jokes aside--- characters that are obviously adults (immortal or not) but look nebulously young can be treated as adults with regards to our rules about NSFW interactions/content. However, it's not hard to tell when a character is in this state for legitimate narrative reasons vs. just looking for loopholes for NSFW situations. You know who you are.

What kinds of characters are not allowed? Other people’s OCs, real people, author self-inserts, or any character that violates the above standards.

Can I app a character who was previously played here? If so, do they remember anything? If you drop a character and are returning, you can app in a character again if they were not taken while you were gone and they may retain memories or may be a completely new version of the character. If you are apping in a character that someone else previously played, they would not retain any memories.

How many characters can I play? Currently the hard cap is seven characters per player.

Can I play more than one character from the same fandom? Provided the characters are not close to each other in canon or wouldn't feasibly have interacted much. This is on a case-by-case basis and we can be more flexible with OCs than canon characters, so please reach out to us about it!

My character has a dietary, physical, or other special need. How do they deal with it? In the same way they would back home, with some time period appropriate adjustments! The market has plenty of food options, a reasonable amount of technology for mobility aids and medical devices exists, and Pumpkin Hollow locals love to help each other out. Feel free to raise any specific concerns to a mod if necessary, or just use your best judgement!

My character has a pet back home. Can they be brought over? Just like the clothing on your character’s back or any items they had on them at the time, characters will not arrive with anything from their home world. They can, however, buy a pet or two at the shops!

My character has an another character (human/animal/spirit/ect.) attached to them at all times. Can I bring them in as an NPC or play both characters as one? This isn't generally encouraged, but if it makes narrative sense then we may be able to work something out. Reach out to the mod team and we'll see what we can do!

Are there any cast caps? Not at this time, but we are trying to keep our overall game cast as diverse as we can and would prefer casts from just a few canons not become disproportionate!

Can characters be canon-updated? Unfortunately not in the traditional way, but you can use the lore behind drops to your advantage to canon-update in kind of a roundabout way.

As mentioned, this page is going to be evolving frequently as our lovely players give us more food for thought, so please refer back often! There's also space below for you to ask us any pressing questions you may have as well, so fire away!

Shops

SHOPS
grocery Instead of buying individual food items you can buy a menu of groceries that falls into one of three budget categories. The specifics are up to you, as the menus are meant to simplify your finances, but choose wisely! Your grocery budget is meant to last you the entire month and each category comes with its own perks or lack thereof.

Basic | Consists of the bare minimum to fulfill basic needs. Some bread, some veg, and maybe a little bit of meat. This will keep you alive and that’s about it. May leave you still hungry or leave you susceptible to food crisis. Farmers and Fishermen get this automatically through their work in providing food. | Cost: 50 Brass

Bountiful | Consists of ingredients for filling, hearty meals and occasional treats! Enough to share with a hungry neighbor or get through a crisis without incident if you ration well. | Cost: 100 Brass

Lavish | The finest ingredients money can buy, fit for nobility or preparing for a feast. Fine selections of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, bread, expensive spices, and sweets! Those who purchase this menu will be immune to events affecting food resources, can frequently offer food to neighbors with no cost to themselves (or host a dinner party), and once per month can choose to resurrect at home in bed if they die. | Cost: 300 Brass
upgrades Interested in upgrading your home or business? Seek out a construction consultation, or become a shareholder of your business depending on what it is! All upgrades should be reported to the bank, but here are some listings for your convenience.

Home Upgrades:

Depending upon where you live, you may be eligible for upgrades to your home! Ask at the Bank if you are not sure what home upgrades apply to you.

Small Item | Small personal items or pieces of decor. Applies to things that are handheld or easily carried by a single person. Available regardless of home or living situation and does not need to be reported, just add it to your ledger! | Cost: 50 Brass

Large Item | A piece of furniture or larger decor. Applies to things that can be carried by a single person with some effort or things that require a team lift. Again, this is available to everyone and does not require approval. | Cost: 150 Brass

Room Remodel | Allows you to modify a single room in a cosmetic way, such as painting it or redecorating with multiple items to personalize it.| 300 Brass

Home Remodel | Allows you to personalize and modify your entire home to make it more functional and personal! May account for minor structural changes, or incur more costs if structural changes are drastic. | Base Cost: 500 Brass

Home Expansion | Add a new room to your home! May incur additional costs if it requires specialty furniture or has an elaborate design. | Base Cost: 1500 Brass

New Custom Home | Want to build a brand new home from scratch, just for you, wherever you want it? The cost will vary, based on how much space you need and how fancy you want to make it, so inquire at the Bank for details! | Base Cost: 5000 Brass

Business Upgrades:

Some businesses such as farms, clinics, and fishing boats are eligible for expansions while others allow you to invest stock in the company to receive more back over time. Regardless of what the nature of the upgrade is, the benefits are uniform for the sake of simplicity.

Level 1 | This is the level you start at with any job, and it is free. It allows you to get 50 extra Brass for each thread above 10 tags you submit for bonuses. | Cost: None, this is the default

Level 2 | Improves your business space a moderate amount, providing more space, more equipment, or more sources of income depending on the business. Allows you to get 80 extra Brass per thread bonus. | Cost: 800 Brass

Level 3 | The maximum level, which makes your business space the most efficient and high quality it can be! Allows you to get 100 extra Brass per thread bonus. | Cost 2000 Brass
clothing The clothing shop has a variety of offerings in different colors and styles, and are priced by complexity. The specifics of the outfit are up to you as long as it fits into the category you’re paying for, but a few examples are provided.

simple clothing

Simple | A minimal outfit in two or three pieces and basic colors. Includes shoes, and may include some basic accessories like suspenders and hats. Only a bit more fashionable than what you arrived in. | Cost: 50 Brass

classic clothing

Classic | A structured and functional outfit that is relatively durable with some embellishments. Includes shoes, gloves, and a neck accessory and/or hat if desired! | Cost: 200 Brass

stylish clothing

Stylish | A quite fashionable outfit suitable for outings! Tastefully embellished and including any accessories you might like, within reason. | Cost: 300 Brass

lavish clothing

Lavish | A couture outfit indicative of impressive spending, typically intended for formal events. If someone were to wear something like this on the average day, that person is either ridiculously wealthy or terribly gauche. Expensive fabric, fancy embellishments, and bold accessories, none of which are suitable for working in. | Cost: 500 Brass

Custom | Perhaps you’d like something much more specific that doesn’t really fall into the typical fashion of Pumpkin Hollow. The tailor may be able to replicate it for you! Put in a special purchase request on the post below and you will receive a price estimate based on how complex it is, comparable to the existing categories, as well as an estimate of how much time it will take to complete your request.

[NEW!] Winter Coat | The weather outside is frightful! If you would like to get just a winter coat that isn't part of a full outfit, they will range between 100 and 300 Brass based on level of embellishment. Feel free to send a special purchase request for approval!

miscellaneous In addition to the standard fare of essential shops, the streets are packed with unique shops of all kinds. They carry wares like tools, weapons, pets, mounts, jewelry, trinkets, and more!

For now, please submit a special purchase request to the comment below for any miscellaneous items. Prices for items that have been previously requested can be found in this buyer's guide. We'll add official listings for requested items as we determine them!
shady merchant In a back alleyway of the commercial district there is an odd door beneath a tattered shop awning that is marked only with a red crescent moon symbol. Were it not for candlelight flickering through the dirty windows, one might assume it was abandoned. There is an "OPEN" sign dangling from the door knob.

The banner strapped to the desk on which the cash register sits reads "CALLOWAY'S CURIOS" in hand-painted letters. The shelves are stocked with all manner of odd-looking, mostly useless things alongside a few specimen jars. Many of them claim to be good luck talismans but they just look like junk. However, there are a few things worth looking at here.

LAST UPDATE: 2/21/2025
LAST REFRESH: 12/13/2024

Blood Fruit | It looks a bit like a pink onion, but with wrinkled, translucent skin that appears to have a tiny network of bluish veins running just beneath the surface. It's a bit squishy and reeks of iron. A deep red liquid fills the inside of the fruit and rushes to its surface when it is punctured. The merchant claims they grow on a bush in Lockwood Forest but artfully dodges giving away the location. They go for 20B a pound, which is highway robbery for most comparable vegetables, but they're admittedly quite unique. "You never know what you might need some spare blood for," Calloway says.

Fire Spell Jar | Apparently great for dealing with Brutoks, this amber glass jar is filled with some kind of liquid, a hunk of carnelian crystal, and a bit of fabric that comes out of the top. The lid is otherwise tightly sealed with red wax. Instructions on the sign say that all you need to do is light the fabric and throw for an instant fireball spell. Use with caution. 50B per jar seems criminal, but it is magic, right?

-

Amulet of Honesty | A piece of onyx clasped nicely into a golden base, Calloway warns that, not only will you not be able to remove this if you put it on yourself, you'll have to have someone remove it from you, but it will lose a single chain link any time you're less than honest with someone else. Do it enough times, and breathing will get a bit... challenging. Since it's still a nice piece of jewelry, however, he's asking 250B for it.
[ Requested by: Olivia Fleischmann ]

Automaton Warrior Figurine | Calloway assumes that this must be some sort of revered warrior from another place and time, granted how intricate the details on it are. What's more is that its posable, and it lights up! For an enchanted figurine, no less, Calloway's asking price is 200B.
[ Requested by: Deon Wilson ]

Beasts of the Waking Dream | A book, unfinished, containing extensive information on several creatures from a place dubbed the Dreamlands. If it were finished, Calloway admits he'd ask more for it, but is willing to "cut you a deal" by only asking for 150B for the tome.
[ Requested by: Arthur Lester ]

Bloody Journal | Scrawlings of a madman in a fine leather binding. Several pages are stained with blood. All the wisdom contained in it, however legible or not that is, is in your hands for 100B.
[ Requested by: Miles Upshur ]

Capricious Earrings | No matter how he tries, Calloway can't manage to keep track of these green earrings in one place. As such, the answer to him is clear: to sell them as single pieces. That's probably fine. 200B per earring is a fair price to ask, right?
( MOD NOTE: the Potara earrings, if causing fusion, only last for an hour at a time. Be sure to communicate how this goes with the buyer of the other earring and how exactly that all shakes out! )

"Charles" | A wad of flesh, with a large, fanged mouth on one side of it. Calloway says it's his "buddy" now, and demonstrates as he throws a little cracker to it, and it catches it easily. He has no idea what it's for, nor that it could be anything of note. Sometimes he gets "junk," and sometimes that junk becomes a weird thing you feed crackers. He'll begrudgingly part with Charles for 400B.
[ Requested by: Wilson P. Higgsbury ]

Cloak of the Ever-Watchful | A magic traveler's cloak that, when worn, your identity becomes impossible to discern, and better than that, anyone looking at you will perceive you looking directly at them! For 300B, you'll never get snuck up on again.
[ Requested by: Music Alwyn Szereban ]

Cloak of Many Bats | An elegant cloak that, when opened, releases anywhere from 1 to 100 bats (feel free to do a dice roll for the Bat Value per each open), which will flutter away from seemingly nowhere. They do appear to be real, tangible bats, but Calloway's never managed to catch one to confirm. It's very dramatic, though! 250B, and you can have as many bats and dramatic entrances as you like.

Disconcerting Amorous Plush Toys | Two somewhat-humanoid plush toys, one orange and one pink in disquieting appearances, stitched together at the hand. Lovers, perhaps? Calloway isn't sure. He doesn't want to think about it. He doesn't even like looking at them, and the meager 100B price tag speaks to that.

Elegant Snakeskin Trenchcoat | A finely crafted garment of snakeskin, barely even damaged from Calloway's finding it! No enchantments to speak of, but what does one need magic for when the fashion speaks for itself? For such a luxurious find, his asking price is 300B.
[ Requested by: Daniil Dankovsky ]

Flesh... Onion? | Calloway doesn't know what this is, and he doesn't even try to pretend to, this time. It looks like the bulb of a plant, but it's decidedly meaty. If asked if he's tried to plant it, he'll quickly assure you that, of course not, he can't be out of work for a day, he's got a business to run. Even with his lack of confidence in it, he's asking for 100B per bulb, and there are 3 total.
[ Requested by: Wilson P. Higgsbury ]

Frog's Cloth | A long, wound-up length of plain cloth, which is reported to be able to snare targets with unparalleled precision. "Like frogs n' flies," Calloway remarks. "Thought about calling it Spider's Cloth, but there's already been too many spiders in here." He's asking 350B for such an incredibly handy tool.
[ Requested by: Hitoshi Shinsou ]

"Gently-Used" Bag of Holding | A bag of holding is a fantastic find! This one does come with a small catch, however: it seems someone's used it before. As such, when you pull an object out, sometimes it'll come out with a little bit of lint, a piece of old candy, or... what appears to be glitter? Maybe the previous owner was the artsy type. It still holds anything, though! For 300B, this handy bag is yours.

Intimidating Infernal Blade | Named as such because Calloway thinks he's seen demons with similar weapons, this weapon is a sharp, multi-bladed sweeping tool, certain to do some real damage to whatever it hits. "It's been too long since I did some perfectly legitimate weapon trading," Calloway reminisces. "Ahh, the good ol' days." For 450B, this blade can be yours!
[ Requested by: Beckett Mariner ]

"Lady by the Lakeside" | "I'm gettin' into art sales now, apparently," Calloway remarks. "Nice picture, eh? Real scenic, too." He doesn't know the subject of the photo, nor the location, but for this tiny piece of "art", especially with the rarity of full-color photos, he's asking 200B for it.
[ Requested by: James Sunderland ]

Mask of Many Voices | A half-mask and head-piece, all in one, that allows the user to change their voice to that of another person's. At least, so Calloway says - he says it's "fiddly" and "complicated." 250B, and perhaps you can figure it out with more ease than he was able to!
[ Requested by: Hitoshi Shinsou ]

Miniature Replica of a Useless Table | "If ya want a dollhouse to have somethin' that doesn't sit quite right, I s'pose." Even if Calloway can't discern what the object is supposed to be, it's a nice figurine! For 150B, it could brighten a shelf, or hold a small object poorly on top of it.
[Requested by: Beckett Mariner]

Mystical Bag of Enchanted Stones | Calloway's not sure what these lovely gems are for, but he knows they've got some magic to them. That's surely enough reason for the outrageous asking price of 450B for them, isn't it?
[ Requested by: Cassandra de Rolo ]

Perplexing Peepers | Plastic, rattling, and in an unreasonable volume, these plastic eyes topple whichever way you move them. Calloway keeps the box of them closed, because, as he's been quoted, "I don't like 'em lookin' at me. They're weird." 150B gets you the whole box!
[ Requested by: Max Maximum ]

Restless Orb | A shimmering blue sphere, egg, or perhaps a rock? Whatever it is, it occasionally teeters on its uneven sides within the basket he's put it in. Calloway isn't sure what it is, and he doesn't intend to mess with it too much to find out. No sense breaking the product, after all. Someone, perhaps with 250B to spare, will be willing to take a closer look!
[ Requested by: Drelasa Veloth ]

Staff of Serpentine Manifestation | Apparently, this magical rod has only one spell it can cast: it turns "sticks," extremely loose in its definition, into snakes. The process is irreversible. He warns that, if you use this on the house of a hated neighbor, he isn't responsible for any legal hot water that comes from that. 300B, and you can have as many snakes as you like!
[ Requested by: Anders ]

Unruly Crystal Gardening Kit | One of Calloway's "special" products, that he expressly leads you to a back room to see, where purple crystals accompany scorch marks on his floor. "Don't have a smoke beside even a little one," he warns. "But they sure are pretty to look at, aren't they?" Considering this handy product offers unlimited crystals, his asking price is an outrageous 800B.
[ Requested by: Sally Boyle ]

BARGAIN BIN

Sometimes goods don't sell as quickly as Calloway might like them to. He's not a beacon of patience, and small items that aren't moving are just gathering dust, as far as he's concerned.

For things such as these, he's created the Bargain Bin, a clearance section of sorts to help move some of his lingering stock. For information on the items, each name contains a drop-down with more information!

Battered Teaware Tragically damaged before Calloway could get his hands on them, the teapots and teacups alike have suffered some losses to their structural integrity, making them poor choices for drinking. Spectral creatures seem to be attracted to them, though! There are two teapots and three teacups remaining. Each teapot is 100B, and each teacup is 50B.

Book of Food Poetry Several copies of a surprisingly long anthology of shortform poems describing food. There are over 200 entries. The book's pages are strangely stiff and spiral-bound, and have pictures of some entries. The book is entitled "The Cheesecake Factory". Each one is 25 brass - a bargain, he says, for so much exceptional writing. Two copies are available.

Bottle of Stink A bottle of foul smelling teal-blue liquid. The odor is something almost akin to mint, but awful, Calloway notes. The front label is damaged from where it was found laying face-down on the mud, but the text "TERINE" is still legible. The label on the back, however, is fully intact. It's unclear why anyone would want this. 25 brass, because he really just wants it gone more than anything.

Canned Experience A tin can containing disgusting food. "I tried one for myself," Calloway admits. "It tasted like dog food, but afterwards I got way better at bookkeeping and organizing for some reason." One can costs 100 brass, and there are two remaining.

Collectible Bug-Eyed Homunculi "Got a whole shelf of these little evil things. Look at them," Calloway complains. They come in a wide variety of assorted shapes and colors, and there are currently 15 in total, and each one is 75B. Do you recognize anyone among them? (Feel free to specify who or what the figurine is of when you buy it!)

Flighty Inkwell A small, antique inkwell in the shape of a cicada, which can have its ink accessed by opening its wings. Unfortunately, judging by some splashes of ink around the shop, and the fact that the inkwell is now kept in a small box, it seems to have a bit of a mind of its own. Not to mention that surprisingly low price of 100B. Hey, it is a nice antique, though, isn't it?

Jar of Soothing Stink Though the smell is strange and remarkably pungent, Calloway is pleased to report that this substance eases the ache of the joints like nothing else does, if you can get past the tingling sensation that comes with it. Each large jar bears a tiger on the fading label. There are 3 jars, and each costs 100B.

"Larval Parenthood" Moldable Clay Strange, vexing kits that claim to allow you the joy of creating your very own larva. There are 4 available, and Calloway is asking a mere 50B for each, as he doesn't feel right asking for more for something you could feasibly "parent."

Leaf Everlasting A broad, vibrantly green leaf, that is unable to be ripped, never seems to wilt, and produces a strong gust when swung. It looks like it could be held at either end and used to glide, with how exceptionally strong it is! 200B for this leaf of many talents.

Pendant of Purring An elegant amulet depicting a stylized cat, accented by a lovely piece of cat's eye gemstone. When wearing it, it simply gives the wearer the new ability to express their joy, comfort, and calm through a feline purr, all for the low asking price of 100B.

Scroll of Ultimate Ascension Calloway will not let you read this scroll inside his business, and simply claims that you'll have to trust that it's worth the money. Has he ever let you down before? Don't answer that. 100B, and you can learn the secrets within.

Sneaky Pajamas Comfortable garments that are far a bit too tight and marginally overdecorated, as far as Calloway's concerned. They let you move around in remarkable silence, however! 300B for the full set.

Story-weaving Incenses Aroma-therapy? No, no. Calloway will assure you that aroma-story-telling is the newest experience to hit Marrow Isle, and these incenses, with the stories they portray in their fragrant curls of smoke, will show you exactly what he means. When asked what he saw, he'll report that the "world's saddest giant snake ate some poor bastard," and elaborate no further. It better be a worthwhile experience, for the steep asking price of 150B per stick. There are presently 2 total.

Vile Potion Metal tubes similar to the pocket tankard, but taller, containing an absolutely disgusting fizzy green liquid that makes the drinker go real fast. There are 10 in total available. 75 brass will get you a single tube.

The shop restocks often, and the merchant adds new items to his lineup every time he finds something "mysterious and otherworldly" that he thinks might be valuable. If you have anything in mind you'd like Mr. Calloway to keep an eye out for, please make a special purchase request over at the bank! For past items, please see the log of sold items. (Note that you absolutely can buy items for other people or items other players have requested, but we provide notes on who asked for what so that there can be a conversation about it beforehand!)

player owned As new residents establish themselves here in Pumpkin Hollow, they've opened up new businesses! Shops can be run by Artisans and Physicians out of their home-workspaces or by Entrepreneurs who pay to open up new businesses such as restaurants, inns, theatres, or other custom establishments. Some other circumstances can allow characters to open businesses. Here are all the current businesses owned by otherworldly immigrants to Marrow Isle.

Infernal Arms & Armor | A blacksmith's forge owned by River la Croix, predominantly focused on combat gear. She can also provide enchantment services. She has two apprentices by the names of Ashwood and Sulana, both local elves.

Pinhole Printing and Binding | A printing press and book binding shop owned by Gerard Keay. He can print manuscripts into proper books or make copies of existing books, bind blank reams of paper into journals, and more! Additionally he prints the Pumpkin Hollow Gazette and supplies the newsstands in Downtown Hollow.

Blackberry Apothecary | A drug store owned by Sally Boyle. She makes all of her medicines with local plants and has an impressive knowledge of herbalism and chemistry. Additionally, her shop carries first aid supplies and "recreational" substances.

Various Medical Establishments | Several medical clinics have become available via newly-arrived doctors. Marrow Isle Health and Wellness is still currently owned by local physician Dr. Agnes Winterbottom but is slated to be taken over by Chris Freeman. The Finest Kind Clinic is owned by Dr. Hawkeye Pierce and occasionally doubles as a bar (a very unique approach to medicine, indeed). The Office of Dr. John H. Watson, M.D. is precisely what it says on the tin. First Aid, an "automaton" who can transform into an amazing self-driving ambulance carriage, is capable of transporting patience to any of these establishments in the event of an emergency.

Mipha's Grace | While not technically a shop, this fishing vessel owned and captained by Princess Zelda is the source of a fair amount of the island's seafood and is responsible for harvesting seaweed from the seaweed garden established by Jean. Several residents --- Jon Sims, Pomni, and Bart Torgal --- work aboard the ship. A seafood stall run by members of the crew can frequently be seen in the market district.

Velvet, Ambrosia, and Silk | A brothel run by Hikiishi Magne . In addition to erotic services the brothel offers singing and music, gaming tables, space for symposiums on topics related to gender and sexuality, and the services of noted chef Max Maximum. A magical barrier over the door bars entry to everyone under the age of eighteen.

St Arden-Sul Surgery/Butterfly's Fang Salon | A cosmetic surgery/tattoo parlor run by Sheogorath/Theodore Gorlash, offering cosmetic alterations both mundane and magical!

Hitchcock's Textiles | Owned and operated by Cal "Okie" Hitchcock III, this shop offers crafting supplies such as fabric, yarn, needles, thread, and unspun cotton, as well as a selection of fine blankets, socks, quilts and scarves. A perfect stop on any adventurer's quest for maximum coziness!

Because the only way for residents to officially make money is via Activity Bonuses, all transactions made at player-owned shops will have the expenses handwaved. As a courtesy, if you obtain items or services from the shops in question, the best way to pay them is by threading with them long enough to obtain an Activity Bonus.

Jobs

AVAILABLE JOBS
overview Pumpkin Hollow is a beautiful, tight-knit community built squarely on the spacious and scenic Marrow Isle. It has the makings of a flourishing town, but with a rather remote location and rumors of the island’s curse reaching the shores of the mainland, it’s gotten harder and harder to keep the town’s most important roles staffed. As such, Pumpkin Hollow Town Hall is offering lucrative start-up packages to anyone willing to help keep the town running and fed! Each job also allows for unique opportunities for events and investigation, so it’s a great way to keep your day to day life interesting.
farmer Description: Plant a seed, start a legacy. Farming is a time-honored tradition since nearly the beginning of time, and the backbone of civilization. Food shortages are historically one of Pumpkin Hollow’s biggest struggles, but there’s plenty of fertile farming land to be found--- all that’s needed is someone to farm it!

Benefits: You are awarded a plot of land with some seeds, basic farming tools, a cart and horse, and a chicken coop with one chicken. Unless otherwise stated, basic food is always guaranteed at no cost. This is the only role that is given ground transportation at start-up! The cart is always the same, but you can pick your horse.

Drawbacks: You are somewhat isolated from town, meaning you have a ways to go if you need help with anything and will have to plan trips into town with a bit of care. Your basic tools will often leave you sore by the end of the day and can even sometimes break, so you will want to upgrade them once you have the Brass! Also, you are fairly susceptible to the weather.
artisan Description: The makers of things that make life easier and more beautiful, artisans are valued members of society. Make a living from a craft you already know or hone a new one as a tailor, potter, weaver, blacksmith, carpenter, or any other manner of craftsperson, to help fill the town with useful tools, beautiful garments, sturdy furnishings and more!

Benefits: You are given a home with a workshop full of all your basic amenities. You are also admitted to the Artisan’s Guild, which allows you to receive a discount on tool upgrades.

Drawbacks: Artisans’ lives revolve around their craft, and as such, your work will keep you fairly busy. You will have to go out of your way to make time for social gatherings and find it challenging to get away from work during daylight hours. However, tread with caution if you intend to spend much time out on the town at night. You’re more likely to run into trouble without the sun to protect you.
laborer Description: Behind every great society is a bunch of underappreciated, hard working people doing thankless jobs to keep that society turning. Your work as a laborer may be behind the scenes, but never doubt its importance! Take on a role as a miner, railroad worker, construction worker, engineer, or factory employee to become a productive member of the community in its most literal sense.

Benefits: You are given a nice townhouse in the city, close to your work (or in the case of miners and railroad workers, close to the trolley that will take you to work). There is no shortage of positions in this role, so you will never be without steady work, and your paycheck is always guaranteed by the company so you are immune to events that affect your livelihood. You are also right in town, close to shops and nightlife!

Drawbacks: Your work schedule is very strict and you will be hard-pressed to get a day off. Additionally, you’re susceptible to a higher rate of occupational hazards.
entertainer Description: What is society without art to make it beautiful? To keep morale high, Town Hall is awarding charming apartments and a place in the limelight to talented individuals who can keep the town smiling. Positions as a fine artist, musician, or any manner of stage performer are open! This role also applies to individuals who provide entertainment of the “adult” variety. Such work is legal to practice in Pumpkin Hollow as long as you have a license from Town Hall!

Benefits: You are given a lovely unit in an apartment downtown which does not require any upgrading to be very comfortable, and have complete freedom over your schedule. You are also prone to a somewhat lower rate of occupational hazards and may receive tips or other financial endorsements for your good work from locals!

Drawbacks: Show business is harsh--- this role is reserved only for residents who demonstrably (i.e. canonically) have some sort of skill in an entertainment field, or develops such a skill as a hobby first. Sex workers are the exception, but this role is only available to those over the age of 20. Additionally, you are more susceptible to livelihood struggles.
enforcer Description: A most beloved line of work for anyone who loves protecting the weak and government sanctioned acts of violence, enforcers are the defenders of the law and the vanquishers of criminals. Take up work as a constable, mercenary, or guard to help keep Pumpkin Hollow safe and orderly.

Benefits: You are given a home a ways out from the center of town, near a trolley stop but closer to the farmland, which is quite scenic and a little safer than in town. Being the long arm of the law yourself, you will find that sometimes justice is willing to bend for you, as long as you can justify the bend as being necessary to your work. Workplace supervision is fairly lax so you can get away with quite a bit. You may also have an easier time seeking information that might otherwise be hard to get.

Drawbacks: This line of work is not for the faint of heart as occupational hazards are not an if, but a when. Only those who are strong of mind and body should apply. You may also face difficult moral quandaries as your ethics and your esprit de corps are pitted against each other.
physician Description: It is debatable which role is the most valuable in Pumpkin Hollow, but no one will contest that physicians are high up on the list. While death is impermanent here, it isn’t desirable, and with injuries and illness cropping up all the time in a cursed town, physicians are a necessity to keeping the townsfolk alive and well.

Benefits: You have two options for your home; a house in the commercial district that has a clinic built in, or a cottage on the far side of town and a separate clinic elsewhere. Both have their benefits and are a matter of preference. Much like laborers, you will never experience a shortage of work, and you are an extremely valued and trusted member of society. Locals tend to trust you.

Drawbacks: You may be on call to work at any time of day or night, making for a hectic or inconsistent schedule, and you are susceptible to supply shortages which may force you to expense your work necessities out of pocket or give inadequate treatment. Also you can absolutely accidentally kill people and that doesn’t tend to make you very popular when they come back to life.
fisherman Description: Set sail upon the crisp, dark sea surrounding Marrow Isle and cast nets and lines and crab pots to bring in a vital source of food for the town. It’s a lonely life, certainly not for everyone, but it is rewarding, in its way, and there is much to discover in the seas around this accursed island.

Benefits: You are given a lovely seaside cottage, and a selection of options for your boat situation. While you can set out alone, it’s advised that you collaborate with at least one other person in the same role, or join a crew. Fishermen (which do not have to be men) are guaranteed basic food at no cost, and have access to dredging equipment which gives them a high chance of finding treasure, as well as unique clues regarding the town’s accursed origins which would otherwise be lost to sea. Additionally, fishermen are allowed a reasonable amount of shore leave, meaning that they can enjoy large amounts of time off work with no impact to their finances.

Drawbacks: The fisherman role is high risk, high reward--- the treasure, shore leave, secrets, and a nice home don’t come without comparable costs. Occupational hazards are commonplace, as seafarers are susceptible to a high rate of both supernatural and weather events that can be very dangerous. Additionally, much of your time will be spent isolated on a boat with just a few people. (Although this can be really good for building strong CR!)
laggard Description: No one said you had to work.

Benefits: No employer to appease or schedule to keep, no groceries to buy or questions about where your next meal will come from. Your schedule is completely your own! Spend it socializing, exploring, investigating, or getting up to no good. You receive a voucher for free meals for the month with your 200 Brass stipend each month, so make sure you check in!

Drawbacks: Your free meals and board are covered by Town Hall, at the cost of your community engagement bonuses. This means that in exchange for your easy living situation, you cannot submit threads for an activity bonus--- you just get the flat rate of 200B per month at Activity Check. This can spare you a fair bit of math, but it does make saving money more challenging. Additionally, because you’re living out of a room at the inn, you aren’t eligible for any upgrades and are somewhat limited in how much your space can be personalized.
entrepreneur Description: Start your own business! Own a shop, a bar, a restaurant, or any other business in town that is completely of your own design, and live anywhere in Pumpkin Hollow you like. An ambitious undertaking that doesn’t come with any handouts from Town Hall, but you do earn the respect of the townsfolk for working hard and bringing something new and exciting to town. Bravo, you!

Benefits: You are able to completely customize your business to suit your product or service, and you automatically are boosted to a Level 3 business, meaning you get 100B per bonus thread. Additionally, you can take on other players as employees.

Drawbacks: You must pay completely out of pocket for this role, and the price given to you by the bank will vary based on what it is you’re trying to create, but it will not come cheap!
upgrades Some businesses such as farms, clinics, and fishing boats are eligible for expansions while others allow you to invest stock in the company to receive more back over time. Regardless of what the nature of the upgrade is, the benefits are uniform for the sake of simplicity. These upgrades can be purchased on the Bank page.
